Venetian plastering in Knutsford

Marmorino, limewash and decorative lime finishes, tinted to your sample in Birmingham and applied in Knutsford by our own applicators.

Zavoré provides Venetian plastering in Knutsford for period townhouses, cottages, newer family homes and shops. We supply authentic Italian lime based plaster from our Birmingham base, and our own applicators travel here to apply it, using colour tinted to your approved sample. The simplest start is a sample board, or a handful of photos and your postcode emailed to sales@zavore.co.uk.

Knutsford is a planned trip for us, so we book the job as a block of days. The applicators remain on site and build up the coats in order, then we agree dates once the sample and price are signed off.

The homes and buildings of Knutsford

Knutsford is a small Cheshire market town with a well preserved centre. Elizabeth Gaskell grew up here and drew on the town for Cranford, and much of what she knew is still recognisable, with Georgian brick townhouses, Victorian terraces and cottages lining streets such as King Street and Princess Street. The centre is a conservation area, and many buildings in it are listed.

The town also has an unexpected Italian streak. The Victorian builder Richard Harding Watt added a handful of eclectic, Italian inspired buildings along King Street and nearby, including the Gaskell Memorial Tower and the Ruskin Rooms. Beyond the old streets sit larger Victorian villas, interwar semis and modern estates, and Tatton Park lies on the edge of town.

For plasterers, the centre means old brick, lath and plaster and walls that have moved a little over two centuries. A lime finish suits them far better than a sealed modern coating. The newer estates are the opposite, with plasterboard that needs reinforced joints and the right primer. We plan each finish around the wall in front of us.

Finishes that suit Knutsford homes

  • Marmorino for Georgian and Victorian reception rooms, where the soft lime surface complements panelling, shutters and fireplaces.
  • Limewash for cottage walls, bedrooms and landings, giving a matt, chalky depth that never feels glossy or new.
  • Travertino for a hallway or kitchen wall, with the look of cut stone in a lime based finish.
  • Hand painted murals for a dining room or stairwell, painted over a prepared plaster wall for a scene that belongs to the house.

For bathrooms we would specify tadelakt or microcement on a waterproofed wall, rather than Venetian plaster in a shower.

How a Venetian plastering job in Knutsford runs

Begin with photos, rough measurements and the postcode, and we can often answer small questions straight away. Then we survey the walls, noting the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and movement, access and how the room is used. In an older house we pay particular attention to damp and past repairs, and we tell you plainly if something needs fixing before the decorative coats go on.

Once you have approved the sample and price, we set the dates. Your plaster is tinted to that sample before it leaves Birmingham. The coats are thin and need drying time, so the room should be clear of other trades, protected, and kept at a steady, gentle warmth.

The old town has narrow streets and limited parking, and listed buildings may have their own rules about what can be altered inside, so tell us early about access and check with the council about consent. More detail is on our Venetian plaster installation page.

Buying materials and learning the craft

If a local decorator will lay the finish, we tint the plaster, base coats and wax and send them tracked to your door. Decorators and plasterers who want to learn can book one of our Venetian plaster courses in Birmingham, and trade accounts are available.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Knutsford

Do you travel to Knutsford for Venetian plastering?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham. We plan the work in blocks of days so the team can stay and apply each coat in order.

Which finish suits a Georgian house in Knutsford?

Marmorino or limewash. Both are lime based and breathable, which suits old brick walls, and their soft surfaces sit well with period joinery.

Can you work in a listed building?

We can advise on plaster, but consent for interior work is a matter for the council's conservation officer, so please check before you book.

Can I order Venetian plaster for my own decorator?

Yes. We tint it to your chosen colour and send it tracked, together with base coats and wax.
