Because Macclesfield is further from our base, we organise the installation in blocks of days. The applicators stay on the job, work through the coats in order and finish without a stream of return trips.
Macclesfield made its name from silk. In the Victorian period the town was full of silk mills, and rows of terraced houses climbed the hillsides to house the workers, many in brick and some in local stone. Some mills still stand, a few now converted into homes and offices, and the Silk Museum and Paradise Mill keep that history in view. Beyond the town the land rises quickly into the Peak District foothills, and stone cottages and farmhouses are common in the villages around.
Closer in, West Park and the streets around it have larger Victorian houses, there are interwar and postwar estates on the edges, and Prestbury and Bollington nearby add more characterful older homes alongside newer ones.
That variety shapes the plaster. Hillside terraces and stone cottages often have thick, uneven walls that have taken on moisture and dried out again for generations. They like a breathable lime surface, not a sealed one. Former mills have tall ceilings and wide walls. Newer estates are plasterboard and demand proper joint reinforcement and a primer before any decorative plaster.
In wet areas, microcement or tadelakt on a properly waterproofed wall is our advice, as Venetian plaster is not suited to the inside of a shower.
We ask first for photos, rough measurements and the postcode. Before pricing, we survey the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and movement, and how the space is used, plus access and protection of floors. With a stone or hillside property we look carefully at damp, and if something needs sorting first we tell you plainly.
With sample and price approved, we agree the dates. We tint your plaster to the sample in Birmingham before it travels. Cold, damp rooms slow drying, so in a cool house it helps to keep the heating gently on, and the room needs to be clear of other trades while the coats cure.
