Venetian plastering in Hertfordshire

Lime Venetian plaster, Marmorino and limewash, tinted to your colour in Birmingham and laid across Hertfordshire by our own applicators.

Zavoré provides Venetian plastering in Hertfordshire, covering the whole county from the Chilterns edge to the Lea valley. We are based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel to install authentic Italian lime based Venetian plaster, Marmorino, polished plaster and other decorative finishes. Send photos, rough measurements and your postcode to sales@zavore.co.uk, or order a sample board to choose a colour.

Hertfordshire is outside the Midlands, so the work is planned in blocks of days. The team stays on site and lays each coat in turn, and dates are agreed once the sample and price are signed off.

A county of very different towns

Hertfordshire is a county of market towns, garden cities and commuter suburbs, and the building stock changes sharply from one to the next.

In the old towns, such as Hertford, Hitchin and St Albans, you find timber framed buildings, Georgian brick town houses and Victorian terraces, often within a few streets of each other. We have separate pages for St Albans and Hertford. Berkhamsted and Tring in the west sit on the edge of the Chilterns, and Bishop’s Stortford on the River Stort and Ware on the Lea add more old market town streets in the east.

Letchworth and Welwyn Garden City are the county’s two garden cities, planned in the twentieth century with generous gardens and Arts and Crafts cottages in Letchworth and neo Georgian houses in Welwyn Garden City. Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage and Hatfield were developed as postwar new towns, with a great deal of mid century housing. On the London side, Watford, Radlett, Rickmansworth and Potters Bar are commuter towns with Victorian, Edwardian and interwar streets and plenty of 1930s semis. Hatfield is also home to Hatfield House, a Jacobean mansion.

Flint and brick are the traditional materials, and many older cottages have both. In the villages you find farmhouses, barn conversions and big country houses, and newer homes fill the gaps.

Which finish for which Hertfordshire house

  • Limewash for timber framed and flint cottages in the villages, where a soft, breathable surface suits uneven walls.
  • Marmorino for Georgian and Victorian town houses, because lime breathes through solid brick.
  • Venetian plaster for interwar semis and detached houses, where a classic burnished surface refreshes a hall or living room.
  • Polished plaster for new flats and townhouses, where plasterboard walls can be made flat and ready for a deep sheen.
  • Clay plaster for a natural matt surface in a barn conversion or bedroom.

For bathrooms, we suggest tadelakt or microcement. Venetian plaster is not what we recommend inside a shower.

How a Hertfordshire job is planned

The first step is photos and a few questions about each room. Before we price, we survey the walls, checking the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, access and protection. A flint cottage, a 1930s semi and a new flat each need different preparation, and we say plainly when a wall needs skimming, stripping or damp resolving first.

When you approve a sample, we tint the plaster to the colour in Birmingham before it leaves us. Pick from 48 house colours or any NCS reference. Because Hertfordshire is a large county, we agree where the team will work, where materials can be stored and what parking is available, which differs from a village lane to a town centre street.

Thin coats need time to dry, and cold, damp rooms dry slowly. Our installation page lists every finish we lay.

Developers, designers and decorators across the county

Hertfordshire has a lot of new housing and a lot of refurbishment. Designers and architects will find our specification page useful, and decorators can buy tinted material with tracked delivery, take a course in Birmingham or open a trade account.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Hertfordshire

Which parts of Hertfordshire do you cover?

The whole county. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham, and we plan the work in blocks of days.

What suits a flint cottage in a Hertfordshire village?

A breathable lime finish such as limewash or Marmorino. Acrylic look alikes form a film, which is a poor match for old solid walls.

Can you plaster a garden city house in Letchworth or Welwyn?

Yes. We survey first, because the walls vary between original plaster and later alterations, and then choose a finish to suit.

Can I buy the plaster for my own plasterer?

Yes. We tint it to your approved colour and send it tracked, with base coats and wax.
