Venetian plastering in Hertford

Breathable lime Venetian plaster, Marmorino and limewash, tinted to your colour in Birmingham and laid by our own applicators in Hertford.

Zavoré provides Venetian plastering in Hertford, and our work suits the old houses of the county town especially well. We are based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel to Hertfordshire to install authentic Italian lime based Venetian plaster, Marmorino and limewash. Send photos of the walls, rough measurements and your postcode to sales@zavore.co.uk, or order a sample board to start choosing a colour.

Hertford is a good distance from Birmingham, so we plan the job in blocks of days. The applicators stay on site and lay each coat in order, and dates are fixed after you sign off the sample and the price.

A county town built over many centuries

Hertford sits where the rivers Lea and Beane meet, and its centre has a long history. The castle gatehouse still stands near the middle of town, and the lanes around Fore Street, St Andrew Street and the market place contain timber framed buildings from the medieval and Tudor periods beside Georgian and Victorian brick fronts. Much of the centre is a conservation area, and many buildings in it are listed, which affects what can be changed outside and sometimes inside.

The river is part of the town too. Walks beside the Lea pass old riverside buildings and newer flats. Bengeo, just north of the centre, has Victorian and Edwardian streets with a village feel, and Hertford East station connects the town to London. Beyond the old town are twentieth century estates, plus nearby villages with cottages and larger houses, and new housing has been added on the edges of the town in recent years.

For a decorative plasterer, an old Hertford house is a different job from a new flat. Timber framed walls move gently and need a finish that moves with them. Older plaster may be thin or patched, and a lime finish suits it because it breathes. Newer plasterboard is stable but needs its own preparation.

Matching finishes to Hertford buildings

  • Limewash for timber framed rooms and low ceilinged cottages, where a soft, chalky wall flatters uneven surfaces and old beams.
  • Marmorino for Georgian and Victorian rooms, giving a gentle sheen that suits the proportions without looking glossy.
  • Venetian plaster in a burnished finish for a formal drawing room or stair hall in a larger town house.
  • Plaster cornice and coving for repairing or recreating ceiling details in period rooms.

For bathrooms in older houses we suggest tadelakt or microcement, because Venetian plaster does not belong inside a shower.

The survey comes first

Before pricing, we survey the walls. We want to know what they are made of, how flat and sound the plaster is, whether there are cracks, damp or movement, and how the room is used. Photos often answer small questions. If a listed or period building has a problem such as rising damp, we will say it needs resolving before a decorative finish, not after.

Once you have approved a sample, we tint the plaster to that colour in Birmingham before it leaves us. There are 48 house colours, and any NCS reference can be matched. Narrow lanes in a historic centre can make access tricky for deliveries, so let us know early about parking and carrying distance. The installation page explains each finish in more detail.

Owners, builders and decorators

Owners of listed houses will have their own conservation officer to speak to about any change, and we are happy to answer questions about the materials. If you have a builder or decorator already, we can tint plaster and send it tracked, and we teach the craft on courses in Birmingham. Our trade accounts cover repeat orders.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Hertford

Which finish is right for a timber framed house in Hertford?

Limewash or Marmorino, both lime based and breathable. They suit walls that move and breathe better than an acrylic coating, which forms a film.

Can I decorate inside a listed house?

Often yes, but listed buildings can have rules covering inside as well as outside. Check with the local council before you start.

Do you come to Hertford for a small job?

Yes. We plan the work in blocks of days, and photos and a survey tell us what a smaller job needs.

Can you supply plaster for my own builder?

Yes. We tint it to your approved colour and send it tracked, with the base coats and wax your builder needs.
