Venetian plastering in the Cotswolds

Lime Venetian plaster, Marmorino and limewash, tinted to your colour in Birmingham and installed in the Cotswolds by our own applicators.

Zavoré provides Venetian plastering in the Cotswolds for stone cottages, manor houses, barn conversions and village townhouses. We are based in Birmingham, our own applicators travel to install, and the lime based plaster is tinted to your approved sample before it leaves us. The easiest first step is a sample board, or photos of your walls sent to sales@zavore.co.uk with the postcode.

The Cotswolds covers a wide area, so how we plan a job depends on where it is. Where it is a long way from Birmingham we work in blocks of days, with the team staying to lay each coat in order. Dates are agreed once the sample and price are signed off.

The buildings of the Cotswolds

The Cotswolds is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty stretching across several counties, with Gloucestershire at its heart. Its character comes from the honey coloured limestone that built the villages, from Chipping Campden and Broadway to Burford, Bibury, Stow on the Wold and Painswick. Roofs are often stone slate, and the old wool merchants' houses and churches are among the best known buildings in England.

Inside, these houses are mostly solid walled, with thick stone, lime mortar and plaster, and often uneven surfaces, deep window reveals and low beams. Many are listed, and some villages are conservation areas, so any change to the fabric needs the right consents. Market towns such as Cirencester, Tetbury and Moreton in Marsh add Georgian and Victorian townhouses, while barn conversions and new build houses bring modern plasterboard walls into the same landscape.

That mix is why we choose the finish after we understand the wall. A stone cottage needs to breathe. A new build extension needs reinforced joints and the right primer first. An old wall that has been patched for generations may need skimming before any polished work begins.

Finishes that suit Cotswold houses

  • Limewash for cottage bedrooms, snugs and farmhouse hallways, where a soft, chalky colour sits well beside stone and timber.
  • Marmorino for the formal rooms of manor houses and Georgian townhouses. It is lime, so old walls keep breathing.
  • Clay plaster for those who want an earthy, natural wall in a converted barn or renovated farmhouse.
  • Polished plaster for flat new build walls and extensions, such as a kitchen or glazed garden room.
  • Cornice and coving to repair or recreate plaster ceiling details in Georgian rooms.

How a Venetian plastering job in the Cotswolds runs

We begin with photos, rough measurements and your postcode, which can settle plenty of small questions without a visit. Before we price an installation we survey the walls for substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and movement, and look at access. Stone houses sometimes sit at the end of narrow lanes, so tell us about parking, steps and how materials would reach the room.

After you approve the sample and price, your plaster is tinted in Birmingham and the block of days is agreed. Coats are thin, and each must dry before the next. Cold, damp rooms slow that down, so farmhouses and cottages left unheated need gentle heat during the work. Keep other trades out of the room until we finish.

Questions about Venetian plastering in the Cotswolds

Do you install Venetian plaster in the Cotswolds?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham, and for jobs further away they work in blocks of days so each coat is laid in order.

Which finish suits a Cotswold stone cottage?

A lime based finish such as limewash or Marmorino. Thick solid stone walls need to breathe, which an acrylic film prevents.

Does a listed Cotswold house affect the plastering?

Listing rules cover changes to the building, and you should ask the council before altering fabric. We can talk through a decorative finish over sound existing plaster.

Can I buy Venetian plaster for my own builder in the Cotswolds?

Yes. We tint it to your colour and send it tracked, with the base coats and wax.

To talk about your house, call 07592 929191, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm, or email sales@zavore.co.uk with photos and the postcode. A sample board is the place to start with colour.
