Marmorino in Birmingham

Lime and graded marble grain compressed to a soft satin, kinder to an imperfect wall than polished plaster. Tinted here and laid by our own team.

Home/Marmorino/Birmingham

Marmorino in Birmingham is lime putty carrying graded marble grain, laid in two coats and compressed to a soft satin, never a mirror. Zavoré is based in Birmingham, and the plaster is tinted here, so our own applicators lay it starting from our Birmingham base. A sample board lets you pick the grain and the sheen against your own floor and joinery.

It is the most forgiving of the classic Venetian finishes, which makes it the one we most often suggest for whole rooms in older houses and for busy rooms in hospitality.

Birmingham brick houses and conversions, and why marmorino suits them

A Birmingham house is rarely a blank box. The red brick terraces and villas of Moseley, Kings Heath and Harborne have a century of small repairs behind the plaster, and the converted buildings of the Jewellery Quarter and Digbeth mix old brick, patched plaster and new boarding in a single room.

Marmorino has more body than a polished finish. It will sit over a wall that is sound but not perfect and take some of the unevenness out rather than advertise it, because grain scatters light where a mirror concentrates it. In an old house that is a real advantage.

It is also lime, so it moves a little with the building and lets a solid wall breathe. What cracks old walls is a hard brittle skin laid over something still shifting, and marmorino sits at the softer end of the family. If you want a wall that reflects like polished stone, you want polished plaster in Birmingham instead.

Where marmorino works in Birmingham rooms

Think whole rooms rather than single feature walls. Bedrooms and living rooms work beautifully, as do ceilings and window reveals, and period houses with solid breathable walls. A whole room in high polish can be a lot to live with, while a whole room in marmorino reads as a surface, not an event.

In commercial spaces it suits restaurant and hotel interiors, the sort of rooms that fill the city centre and the canalside. It copes with wear at shoulder height, and waxed it wipes down. Read more about the finish on our marmorino finishes page.

The sheen is a choice you make with the trowel. Left light it sits close to matt, worked harder it becomes an eggshell or satin, and waxed it deepens without turning reflective. Keep it out of showers and steam rooms, where tadelakt belongs, and do not expect a flat industrial concrete look.

How a marmorino job in Birmingham runs

We survey first, checking the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, access and how the room is used. If a painted wall is sound and well stuck we can usually go over it after washing and priming. Flaking paint or an old oil coating comes off first.

The sample board settles grain and sheen. Marmorino comes in 48 house colours or any NCS reference, and the tub is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham. The usual build is two coats over a primed wall, the second pressed tight and skimmed back while it is still working.

The wet edge matters, so a room is worked in order by our own team. With our base here, Birmingham work does not need the planned block of days away that a distant job does. Dates are agreed once sample and price are signed off, and the steps sit on our marmorino installation page.

Buying the materials, or learning to lay it

Marmorino is the finish we suggest a decorator learns first. There is no burnish window to miss, the grain hides small inconsistencies, and a bad pass can usually be rescued with another. A few days on a course will have you laying it properly, and we run those in Birmingham. See the training page.

We sell the fine textured lime, primer and wax paste, tinted and sent tracked across the UK from the shop. Decorators and contractors can ask about a trade account. If it is one room in a house of yours and you have never held a trowel, remember the wet edge catches people out.

Questions about marmorino in Birmingham

What is the difference between marmorino and polished plaster?

Same family, different grind. Polished plaster uses marble ground to a powder and is burnished until it reflects. Marmorino keeps a graded grain, so it finishes with visible grain and satin at most.

Will marmorino cover an uneven wall in an old Birmingham house?

It forgives a sound but imperfect wall better than polished plaster, because the grain scatters light. It does not rescue a wall that moves, so we survey first and say what needs making good.

Can marmorino go over painted walls?

Usually, if the paint is sound and well stuck. We wash the wall, make good any damage and prime it so the lime can key in. Flaking paint or old oil based coatings come off first.

Is marmorino waterproof?

It is water resistant, especially waxed, and works well in a bathroom away from the shower. Inside a shower or a steam room the honest answer is tadelakt.
