Concrete effect plaster in Birmingham

A cloudy grey mineral plaster trowelled by hand, not a paint, tinted in Birmingham and laid by our own applicators from our Birmingham base.

Concrete effect plaster in Birmingham is a smooth, cloudy grey wall finish laid in mineral plaster with a steel trowel, not rolled on from a tin. Zavoré is based in Birmingham, so our own applicators lay it starting from our Birmingham base, and we tint the plaster here to the colour you choose. A sample board shows how the cloud actually looks.

It suits the city’s industrial streak well, and it is wrong for plenty of rooms too. This page tries to be honest about both.

Birmingham conversions, canalside flats and lofts, and why concrete effect suits them

Birmingham is a city of canals, brick and former workshops, and that industrial past is part of why a concrete look feels at home. Warehouse and factory conversions around Digbeth and the Jewellery Quarter, canalside apartments and newer blocks in the centre all have flat, square walls and open plan layouts where a calm grey surface fits.

Loft conversions in the terraces of Kings Heath and Handsworth have clean, flat walls too, and so do kitchen extensions on Edwardian semis. In each case the finish is a thin decorative skin, a few passes thick, so the wall underneath decides how good it looks.

It is a poor match for the ornate. A Victorian room full of cornice, picture rail and panelled doors fights a concrete wall rather than sitting with it, and those rooms are often better suited to Venetian plaster or limewash. A damp or moving wall must be fixed at the source first.

Where concrete effect plaster works in Birmingham spaces

Open plan kitchen and dining walls come first, then chimney breasts, hallways and stairwells in newer houses, and loft conversions with flat, square walls. Features such as the wall behind a hob or a bath work if the finish is sealed, which also makes it wipeable.

Commercial interiors are a strong fit. Shopfronts, gallery spaces and creative workspaces are the sort of rooms where a mineral concrete look reads as honest rather than themed. Our concrete effect finishes page explains the material and the products.

The sealed finish copes with bathroom walls generally, and waterproofer goes where water hits regularly. Inside a shower enclosure we would use tadelakt. And if you want one flat, even colour with no variation at all, this is the wrong finish.

How a concrete effect job in Birmingham runs

The survey matters more here than on most finishes. A concrete finish is thin, so hollows, roller stipple from old emulsion, tape lines over plasterboard joints and dusty patches all come up through the coats. We look at flatness, cracks, damp, movement and access, and we say plainly if the wall needs skimming first.

Corners matter more than faces. A wavy arris or rounded external angle shows in low light, and no trowel work hides it. After the survey comes the sample board, in your colour, sealed or bare. Concrete reads as concrete through scale, with big, slow, soft variation across a whole wall.

Material is tinted before it leaves Birmingham, and the wall is primed so the first coat dries evenly. Our team being based here means a Birmingham job needs no planned block of days away. The steps are on our concrete effect installation page.

Buying the plaster, or laying it yourself

You can lay this yourself, though whether you should depends on the wall. A small alcove or chimney breast is a fair first job. A long open plan wall with a return is not, because the cloud has to carry across the whole thing without a join.

We sell Beton Stucco, a bagged mineral plaster tinted to your colour, along with primer and sealer, tracked across the UK from the shop. Budget time for preparation as well as plaster. Builders and designers can ask about a trade account, and our courses in Birmingham are on the training page.

More finishes in Birmingham

If grey is not what you want, other finishes do different jobs. Polished plaster in Birmingham reflects, marmorino in Birmingham gives honed stone grain, and limewash in Birmingham or clay plaster in Birmingham are softer and chalkier.

For seamless floors and bathrooms look at microcement in Birmingham and tadelakt in Birmingham. For metallic walls there is liquid metal in Birmingham. The whole range is at decorative specialists in Birmingham, and the classic finish is Venetian plastering in Birmingham.

Questions about concrete effect plaster in Birmingham

Does concrete effect plaster suit a Digbeth style warehouse flat?

Very well, as long as the walls are sound, flat and dry. A converted building often has patched old plaster beside new board, and we survey those before recommending a concrete look.

Is concrete effect paint the same thing?

No. Concrete effect paint is an acrylic with texture in it, rolled and stippled. What we use is mineral plaster trowelled in thin coats, where the tone sits in the material.

Can I have concrete effect walls in a bathroom?

On bathroom walls generally, yes, sealed and with waterproofer where water hits regularly. Inside a shower enclosure we would not use it, and tadelakt is the right material there.

Will it crack like real concrete?

It is a thin decorative skin, not a slab, so it does not craze like a poured floor. It follows the wall behind it, so movement, board joints and damp must be dealt with first.

To discuss a wall, call 07592 929191 (Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm) or email sales@zavore.co.uk with photos, rough measurements and your postcode. A sample board in your exact colour costs far less than repainting a room you have gone off.
