Liquid metal in Birmingham

Metallic lime plaster and pearl glaze that read as brushed bronze, pewter or gold. Tinted here and trowelled by our own team from our Birmingham base.

Home/Liquid Metal/Birmingham

Liquid metal in Birmingham is a polished lime plaster or pearl glaze carrying mica and metal toned pigment, so a wall reads as brushed bronze, pewter or gold. Zavoré is based in Birmingham, so our own applicators trowel it on starting from our Birmingham base, and the colour is tinted here. A sample board looked at morning and evening is a good way to begin.

It is a showpiece finish for one wall at a time, not a whole house, and it is made for rooms where light moves.

Birmingham bars, hotels and living rooms, and why liquid metal suits them

Birmingham has a long association with metalworking and jewellery, and the Jewellery Quarter is still where much of the trade sits, so a wall that shifts between gold and pewter has a natural home in the city. But the buildings matter more than the story.

Restaurants, bars, hotels and salons in the city centre and along the canals are the most common settings, with lobbies, bar fronts and reception desks where one wall can carry the room. At home it is chimney breasts and alcoves in living rooms, the wall behind a bed or a bath, and cloakrooms where one bold surface is enough.

The sheen records every stroke and every mark, so it is a poor match for a long hallway or stairwell where shoulders and bags rub the wall, and for any wall where you might later want an invisible repair.

Where liquid metal works, and where it does not

Metallics want light that moves. A wall near a window, or one washed by an uplighter, does something different all day, and a wall in flat even light just looks like a shiny colour. That is why we choose walls carefully, and why we ask for photos of the room and the lighting.

It also goes on ceilings and coves that catch light from below, and on bar fronts and counter faces. Keep it away from the wall behind a hob, where heat and grease sit on the surface. Our liquid metal finishes page shows the products and the colours.

Two different things are sold as liquid metal. Cold cast metal, with real bronze or brass powder in a resin binder, is a separate trade that we do not supply. What we lay reads as brushed metal in movement and light, which is a mineral finish that breathes over a lime background.

How a liquid metal job in Birmingham runs

Metallic jobs start with a conversation about the wall and the light. We survey the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement and access, because the preparation behind a metallic finish is most of the labour. Photos and measurements can often answer small questions first.

The sample board is essential. The colour underneath changes everything, since a gold over a warm ground reads like old brass and the same gold over grey goes colder and more pewter. We tint to the approved sample before the material leaves Birmingham.

The flakes lie down in the direction of the stroke and keep a record of every pass, so the job is worked in order by our own team. As we are based here, a Birmingham job needs no planned block of days away. Dates are agreed once sample and price are signed off. See our metallic finishes installation page.

Buying the materials, or learning the craft

There are two routes. Veneziano Metallico and Stucco Suede Metallico carry the shimmer through the body, the deepest route. The other is a plain tinted base with a gold pearl or metallic wax worked over the top, which gives you more control. We sell both, tracked across the UK, from the shop.

If you have laid polished plaster before, a metallic is the same trowel work with less forgiveness. If you have not, it is the wrong finish to learn on, so start on a matt plaster at one of our Birmingham courses on the training page. Contractors can ask about a trade account.

More finishes in Birmingham

Metallic walls look their strongest beside calmer ones. Try polished plaster in Birmingham for a related burnished surface, marmorino in Birmingham for something quieter, and clay plaster in Birmingham or limewash in Birmingham for matt rooms alongside.

For hard wearing and wet areas see microcement in Birmingham, tadelakt in Birmingham and concrete effect plaster in Birmingham. The whole range is at decorative specialists in Birmingham, and the classic finish is Venetian plastering in Birmingham.

Questions about liquid metal in Birmingham

Is metallic wall paint the same as liquid metal?

No. Metallic paint is pigment in a film, rolled on. Metallic plaster is mineral, trowelled in coats, and the mica lies through the material, so it has depth rather than glitter.

Can you give me a real bronze or cast metal wall in Birmingham?

No. Cold cast metal, with real bronze or brass powder in resin, is a separate trade that we do not supply. Tell us early if a design specifies cast metal.

Will liquid metal work for a Birmingham bar or restaurant?

Often well, on a feature wall, bar front or reception desk with moving light. Keep it away from heat and grease, and tell us how the space is used so we can advise at the survey.

Can I use liquid metal in a bathroom?

On walls away from direct spray, yes, sealed properly. Inside a shower enclosure we would steer you to tadelakt.

Tell us about the wall on 07592 929191 (Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm) or email sales@zavore.co.uk with photographs, measurements and your postcode. A sample board posted out lets you see the finish before you commit a wall.
