Practice Panels, Why Training Starts on Boards

Venetian plaster training starts on practice panels because panels let you make mistakes, repeat movements and see every layer without risking a client's wall or your own. At the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham, panels, plasters, primers, waxes and trowels are all provided, and you take your finished panels home.

This guide explains what you learn on panels, why they beat practising on a real wall first, and how to keep using them after the course.

Why does Venetian plaster training start on boards?

It starts on boards because a panel is the safest place to learn a skill that depends on feel, timing and repetition. If a coat goes wrong, you learn from it and start the next panel, rather than living with it on a wall.

  • Low risk. Mistakes cost a panel, not a room.
  • Repeatable. You can try the same movement again straight away and feel the difference.
  • Easy to compare. Panels sit side by side, so changes in pressure, coat thickness or timing become obvious.
  • Easy to talk through. A tutor can pick up a panel, show you what happened and demonstrate the fix.

Learning on a real wall means learning in front of a client, with the clock running. Learning on a panel means you can concentrate on the plaster.

What do you learn on a practice panel?

You learn the whole sequence of building a finish, from preparing the surface to burnishing and protecting it, in a small and manageable form. Each stage of the Beginner Course can be practised on a panel.

  1. Preparing the surface and applying primer and base coats.
  2. Building up thin layers and controlling how they lay.
  3. Creating a range of textures with different trowel movements.
  4. Working Marmorino, polished plaster and metallics from bucket to burnish.
  5. Protecting the finish with the right waxes or sealers.

On the Advanced Course you use panels for more demanding work such as vein work, stencil work, artificial rock, sanding and polishing to a high gloss. A small panel is a good place to try these before you try them on a feature wall. The detail of each course is in training for beginners and advanced training.

Why take the finished panels home?

Your finished panels are a record of what you made and a ready made portfolio, which is useful whether you are a homeowner proud of your work or a decorator showing clients. Every seat includes them.

  • Show clients real examples of your hand rather than photos of other people's work.
  • Compare them with later work to see how your technique has changed.
  • Use them as a reference when you are choosing a finish or colour for a job.

Your panels do not replace the Zavoré certificate, which records the course you completed, but they back it up with something clients can touch. If you plan to quote for work, read pricing Venetian plaster jobs.

What makes a good practice session on a panel?

A good session has one clear aim, such as steadier pressure or thinner coats, and ends with a panel you can compare with the last one. Practising with a purpose teaches far more than covering boards at random.

  • Pick one thing to improve, for example keeping a clean trowel or keeping coats even.
  • Prepare the panel properly each time, because poor preparation spoils good technique.
  • Work in thin layers and allow each one the time the product asks for.
  • Finish and protect the panel, so you also practise the final stage, not just the middle.
  • Keep the panel, label it with what you changed and compare it later.

If something does not look right, bring it to the helpline. Describing a problem with a panel in front of you is far easier than describing a problem on a wall.

How do you keep practising panels after the course?

You keep practising by repeating the stages you were taught on new panels, using trade priced materials and the private course group for advice. Skill grows with repetition, and panels make that repetition cheap and low pressure.

After the course you get trade pricing on Zavoré materials, a private course group and a helpline for life. Trade accounts give ten percent off every material, applied automatically, and you can set one up through the trade page.
