On a Beginner Course you learn a wide range of Venetian plaster textures, from smooth and polished surfaces to softer, cloudier and more tactile ones, and you learn that texture comes from technique rather than from the tub. The 3 day course at the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham teaches you how to create them by hand on practice panels.
This guide explains where texture comes from, what to expect to practise, and how different textures suit different rooms.
Texture comes mainly from how you apply and work the plaster, so the same material can look smooth, cloudy or rugged depending on your hands. That is why a course matters, because the movements are what you are really learning.
Because the result depends on all of these at once, it is hard to learn by guessing. Tuition from working applicators shows you what each change does, and you can try it straight away.
You learn a wide range of textures, covering the foundations that most Venetian plaster walls are built on. The course is not about memorising one pattern, it is about understanding how to steer the surface where you want it to go.
Texture work sits alongside the rest of the syllabus. The course covers the theory (what Venetian plaster is, how the materials behave and how a wall is built up layer by layer), surface preparation and base coats, a wide range of textures, the systems (how many coats each product needs and how to protect the finish), and the finishes Marmorino, polished plaster and metallics from bucket to burnish.
In practice, that means you will work on several panels and compare results. Seeing a smooth burnished surface next to a textured one, made from the same material, makes the link between hand movement and finish very clear. For the wider vocabulary of looks, read Venetian plaster textures and finishes.
Smoother, burnished surfaces tend to suit rooms where light and elegance matter, while more textured finishes add warmth and character to feature areas. The right choice depends on the room, the light and how much the surface will be touched.
| Texture character | Often suits | Worth thinking about |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth and polished | Living rooms, bedrooms, formal spaces | Shows technique clearly, so prep matters |
| Soft and cloudy | Living areas and hallways | Forgiving and natural looking |
| More tactile and varied | Feature walls and statement areas | Think about how it is cleaned and touched |
This is a guide, not a rule. Colour, wax and sheen change the feel of a texture as well. For ideas by room, see Venetian plaster walls room by room, and to see finishes visit the Marmorino page or the polished plaster page.
Once you can control the basics, the Advanced Course takes texture further with artificial rock, textured Marmorino and stencil work. It is a 4 day course for beginners who have done the first course, or people from site.
All three run from 10am to 5pm. Every seat includes tuition, all materials and tools, lunch and refreshments, and your finished panels to take home as a portfolio. Choose your course on the training page. If you are weighing up the commitment, Venetian plastering training for beginners explains the first course in plain steps.
You keep improving by practising on boards, repeating the movements you were taught and using the course group for advice. Texture is a skill of repetition, and each panel teaches you something.
After the course you have trade pricing on Zavoré materials, a private course group and a helpline for life. Trade accounts give ten percent off every material, applied automatically, and you can find out more on the trade page.
You learn a wide range of textures, from smooth and burnished to softer and more tactile surfaces, plus Marmorino, polished plaster and metallics from bucket to burnish.
Mostly from technique. Trowel angle, pressure, coat thickness, movement and timing all change the surface, which is why the course teaches you by hand on panels.
Yes. Your finished panels come home with you as a portfolio, and they are useful for showing clients what you can do.
