Sunderland is a good distance from our Birmingham base, so we plan the work properly before anyone sets off. That means a clear survey, an agreed colour and a booked run of days on site.
Sunderland grew up around the River Wear, with shipbuilding, coal and glass shaping the streets. That history is still visible in the housing. Close to the river and the city centre you find long runs of Victorian and Edwardian brick terraces in areas such as Hendon, Millfield and Ashbrook, many of them with tall rooms and walls that have been patched and repainted many times.
Thornhill, near Mowbray Park, is known for larger Victorian houses and conservation area streets, where original features are worth protecting. Roker and Seaburn on the coast add Edwardian terraces, seafront flats and plenty of salty, windy weather against the outside walls.
Inland, Washington was developed as a new town, so you will find estate housing from the postwar decades beside newer developments across the wider city. Those later homes usually have plasterboard walls, which suit a decorative finish once the joints are reinforced and the right primer is on.
A Victorian terrace wall and a modern estate wall are not the same surface, so we choose the finish around the wall rather than around a brochure.
If you are planning a bathroom, tadelakt or microcement on a properly waterproofed wall is the right route, not Venetian plaster inside the shower.
Send us photos, rough measurements and your postcode. For anything more than a feature wall we then survey, looking at the substrate, how flat the walls are, cracks, damp, movement and how the room is used. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem sorted first, we say so plainly before you spend money on finish.
Once you have approved a sample and signed off the price, we agree dates. The plaster is tinted to the colour on your sample before it leaves Birmingham. Because Sunderland is further from our base, the work is planned in blocks of days, so the team stays on the job and lays each coat in order rather than travelling back and forth.
Coastal homes can be cold and damp in winter, and cold rooms slow drying, so it helps to keep gentle heat on and have joinery and electrics finished before we start. Our Venetian plaster installation page explains the stages in more detail.

A breathable lime finish such as Marmorino or limewash is usually the best fit for solid brick terraces. Acrylic look alikes form a film, which is not ideal on older walls.
