Darlington has a very recognisable building stock, which makes it easy to talk about which finish will work before we visit.
Darlington is a railway town. It was at the heart of the world’s first public steam railway, the Stockton and Darlington, and the town grew in the Victorian period around the railway and its works. That growth left a great deal of red brick housing. North of the centre, around Northgate, and in the streets leading out from the town you find rows of Victorian and Edwardian terraces with bay windows, high ceilings and original fireplaces.
Larger Victorian villas and town houses are found where plots were more generous. Further out, suburbs such as Cockerton and Harrowgate Hill mix interwar and postwar housing, and the edges of town have newer developments, which are usually plasterboard throughout.
This is a town of solid brick walls, so lime based finishes sit very naturally. Plaster that breathes lets old brick move moisture in and out rather than trapping it.
For a family bathroom, tadelakt or microcement on a properly waterproofed wall is the choice, because Venetian plaster is not for inside showers. See microcement installation if that is on your list.
Photos, rough measurements and your postcode are enough for a first answer to small questions. For a full installation we survey the walls first, checking the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement and how the room is used, as well as access and protection. A wall that needs skimming or stripping, or a damp problem solving, gets named before you commit.
You approve a sample and the price, and then we agree the dates. Colour is tinted to your signed off sample at our Birmingham base before it travels north. For a job at this distance the work is planned in a block of days, so the team stays on site and lays each coat in order.
It helps if plastering, electrics and joinery are done and dry before we begin, and if rooms are warm enough for the coats to dry steadily. Cold, damp rooms slow everything down.
