Venetian plastering in the South West

Lime Venetian plaster, Marmorino and limewash, tinted to your colour in Birmingham and installed across the South West by our own applicators.

Zavoré provides Venetian plastering in the South West of England, from Bristol and Bath down to Exeter, Plymouth and the far tip of Cornwall. We are based in Birmingham, our own applicators travel to the job, and every plaster is tinted to your approved sample before it leaves us. A sample board, or photos of your walls emailed to sales@zavore.co.uk with the postcode, is the way to start.

This is a long region, and most of it lies a good way from our Birmingham base. We therefore plan work in blocks of days, with the team staying on the job and laying each coat in order. Dates follow once you have signed off the sample and the price.

A region of very different walls

The South West is built from many different stones, and each calls for its own thinking. Bristol has Georgian terraces and crescents in Clifton, Victorian streets of brightly painted houses, and former harbourside warehouses turned into flats. Bath is built of pale local stone, while the Cotswold edge uses honey coloured limestone. Dorset has Purbeck and Portland stone, Devon and Cornwall have granite and slate, and in many villages the old walls are cob, thick earth walls with thatch above.

The big towns add their own layers. Exeter and Plymouth rebuilt large parts of their centres after wartime bombing. Cheltenham has Regency terraces, and Salisbury and Wells have cathedral closes. Seaside resorts such as Torquay, Weymouth and Bournemouth have Victorian villas and newer apartment blocks. Across all of it are the many holiday homes, farmhouses and barn conversions that give the region its mix.

For solid old walls we use breathable lime finishes. For new apartments and extensions we prepare plasterboard properly first. A salt laden coastal wall and a sheltered town centre wall are not the same job, and we survey before we advise.

Finishes that suit the South West

  • Marmorino for Georgian and Regency rooms in Bristol, Bath and Cheltenham, where tall ceilings and sash windows suit a soft lime sheen.
  • Limewash for stone, cob and granite cottages from the Cotswolds to the Cornish coast.
  • Polished plaster for harbourside flats and modern coastal houses with flat, sound walls.
  • Clay plaster for a natural, earthy wall in a converted barn or farmhouse.
  • Tadelakt for bathrooms, since we do not use Venetian plaster inside a shower.

How a South West job is planned

You send photos, rough measurements and the postcode. Many questions can be settled from them, and then we survey for substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, access and protection. We say plainly if a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp repair before the decorative finish.

Once the sample and price are approved, your plaster is tinted in Birmingham and the block of days is agreed. Thin coats dry one after another, so other trades should be finished, and cold or damp rooms need gentle heat. Narrow lanes, hillside streets and city permit parking can all affect access, so mention them. You can see every service on our installation page.

Designers, builders and the trade

Architects and interior designers working across the region can start with our specification page. If a local builder or decorator will do the work, we sell tinted plaster with tracked delivery, and trade accounts suit repeat orders. Our Venetian plaster courses run in Birmingham.

Our pages for the Cotswolds and for every area we cover go into more detail, and the guide to types of wall finishes is a good place to read first.

Questions about Venetian plastering in the South West

Do you install Venetian plaster across the South West?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham, and for a job this far away they work in blocks of days so each coat is laid in order.

Which finish suits a Georgian house in Bristol or Bath?

Marmorino is a good match, as it is lime based and suits tall, plastered rooms. Polished plaster is better for flatter, newer walls.

What should I use on a cob or granite cottage?

A breathable lime coating such as limewash. These walls take in and release moisture, and a sealed film can trap it.

Can I buy the plaster for my own decorator in the South West?

Yes. We tint it to your colour and send it tracked, with base coats and wax.
