Venetian plastering in Devon

Lime Venetian plaster, limewash and Marmorino, tinted to your colour in Birmingham and installed across Devon by our own applicators.

Zavoré supplies and installs Venetian plastering in Devon, from cob cottages on the moor edge to Regency seaside terraces and new apartments in Exeter. We are based in Birmingham and our own applicators travel to site. The colour is tinted to your approved sample before it leaves us, and a sample board or a few photos sent to sales@zavore.co.uk is the easiest start.

Devon is a big county and a long way from our Birmingham base, so we plan work in blocks of days. The applicators stay on the job and lay each coat in order. We agree the dates once the sample and price are signed off.

What Devon's buildings ask of a finish

Few counties are as varied. Exeter has a medieval cathedral, the Quayside, and Georgian terraces such as Southernhay, along with a lot of newer student and apartment housing. Totnes and Dartmouth keep many old merchants' and timber framed houses. Sidmouth and Exmouth carry Regency and Victorian seaside terraces, while Barnstaple and Ilfracombe in the north show a different, more weathered coast.

Devon is also famous for cob, a mix of earth and straw used to build thick, soft walled cottages, usually with a thatched or slate roof. Dartmoor villages are built of granite. Cob and granite both have to move moisture in and out, so they need breathable lime coatings. Sealing them under an acrylic film can trap moisture in the wall.

Alongside the old stock, Devon has a great deal of postwar and recent housing, including new estates near Exeter and coastal flats. Those walls are plasterboard or modern block, and they want a different kind of preparation.

Finishes that suit Devon homes

  • Limewash for cob and granite cottages, giving a soft, matt, chalky depth that lets walls breathe.
  • Clay plaster for a natural, earthy wall in a converted barn or farmhouse.
  • Marmorino for Georgian and Regency rooms in Exeter, Sidmouth and Totnes, where tall ceilings suit a lime sheen.
  • Polished plaster for modern apartments and kitchens with flat, sound walls.
  • Microcement for showers and wet rooms, as Venetian plaster is not what we recommend inside a shower.

How a Devon installation runs

Start by sending photos, rough measurements and the postcode, and we will say what looks likely. A survey follows before any installation price, covering substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, access and protection. For cob walls this step matters even more, and we tell you plainly if something should be repaired first.

Once you approve the sample and price, the plaster is tinted in Birmingham and the block of days is agreed. Thin coats dry in turn, so other trades should be finished. Cold, damp rooms dry slowly, so keep heat on gently. Narrow Devon lanes, steep seaside streets and permit parking in Exeter or Totnes can all affect delivery, so mention them when you write.

Everything we lay is on the installation page.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Devon

Can you plaster a cob cottage in Devon?

Yes, with a breathable lime finish such as limewash. Cob needs to move moisture, so we avoid sealed films and say plainly if a wall needs repair first.

Do you work in Exeter and the rest of Devon?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham and plan each job in blocks of days, so they stay and lay every coat in order.

Which finish suits a Regency house in Sidmouth?

Marmorino is a good match, as it is lime based and suits tall, plastered rooms. Salt air and damp are checked at survey.

Can I buy Venetian plaster for my Devon decorator?

Yes. We tint it to your colour and send it tracked, with base coats and wax.
