Poole is defined by its water, and the water shapes both the houses and the way they are lived in.
Poole stands on one of the largest natural harbours in the world, with Brownsea Island in the middle of it and heathland and pine woods around the shore. The Old Town beside the Quay has medieval and Georgian buildings, including merchants’ houses that date from Poole’s days as a trading port, and narrow streets close to the water. Other waterside buildings are newer apartment blocks overlooking the Quay.
On the Sandbanks peninsula and around the shore at Lilliput, Parkstone and Canford Cliffs, there are large detached houses and contemporary homes with big windows and open plan rooms facing the water. Newer homes like these have flat plasterboard walls. Elsewhere Poole has plenty of interwar and postwar housing, including bungalows, with older terraces near the Old Town and in Parkstone.
There are two quite different kinds of wall here. In the Old Town and older terraces, walls are solid and old, and they need a breathable lime finish. In the new waterside homes, walls are flat and modern, and they can take a polished surface once the base coats are right.
For showers and wet rooms we suggest tadelakt on a waterproofed wall, not Venetian plaster.
We start with photos, then survey. We check the substrate, how flat the walls are, damp, cracks and movement, and how the room is used. A new open plan room needs the board joints reinforced and the right primer, and an old wall may need repair first. We tell you plainly what the wall needs.
Dates are agreed once you have signed off the sample and price. Poole is some way from Birmingham, so we plan the work in blocks of days and the team lays each coat in order. Narrow Old Town streets and limited parking near the Quay and on the peninsula make it worth telling us early about access, including any gated entrances or lift rules in apartment blocks.
Designers and architects can see how to specify a finish on our page for designers and architects. Builders and decorators can order tinted plaster for tracked delivery, open a trade account or learn the finish on our courses in Birmingham.

A breathable lime finish such as Marmorino. Solid old walls need to release moisture, and an acrylic coating forms a film instead.
Yes. Send us the building access rules, including lift booking, parking and working hours, and we will plan the job around them after the survey.
