Exeter was rebuilt in part after the Second World War, so its housing stock covers almost every period, and the walls vary as much as the streets.

A cathedral city with a bombed past

Exeter has a Roman and medieval city wall in red sandstone, a cathedral with two Norman towers, and a quayside of old warehouses beside the River Exe. Bombing in the Second World War destroyed much of the centre, so the main streets today mix postwar buildings with the older survivors, including the streets around the Cathedral Close and the Georgian terraces at Southernhay and Colleton Crescent.

Climbing the hills away from the centre are Victorian terraces and villas in areas such as St Leonards, Pennsylvania and Heavitree. Many were later divided into flats, and Exeter has a large student population from the university, so lets and shared houses are common.

Further out, the city spreads into interwar and postwar estates, and newer communities such as Cranbrook to the east have flat, modern walls. Across Devon, the villages and farms around Exeter bring cob cottages, stone farmhouses and barns. Cob is earth mixed with straw, and it does best with materials that let it breathe, which is why lime and clay finishes are the traditional choice.

Finishes that suit Exeter homes

  • Marmorino for Georgian and Victorian houses, where thick solid walls need a breathable lime finish.
  • Limewash for cob and stone cottages, and for hallways and bedrooms in terraces.
  • Clay plaster for a soft, earthy room in a Devon farmhouse or barn conversion.
  • Polished plaster for newer apartments and houses with flat walls.
  • Concrete effect for open plan quayside flats and cafes, restaurants and shops.

For rental properties, a durable finish that can be repaired is more sensible than a showpiece, and we will say so.

How a Venetian plastering job in Exeter runs

We start with photos and measurements, then survey. We check the substrate, how flat and sound each wall is, and whether there is damp, cracking or movement. For cob walls in particular we look carefully at their condition before suggesting anything. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixing first, we say so plainly.

After you have signed off the sample and the price, we agree dates. Exeter is some way from Birmingham, so we plan the work in blocks of days and the team lays each coat in order. Hilly streets and limited city centre parking can make access awkward, so tell us early about permits, steps and lift rules.

Landlords, designers and supply only

Landlords, developers and designers can read about how we help on our page for designers and architects. If your builder or decorator will apply the plaster, we send it tinted, tracked and ready, and they can learn the finish on one of our courses in Birmingham. Trade accounts are open to professionals.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Exeter

Can you plaster a Georgian terrace in Southernhay?

Yes. Georgian walls are solid and old, so a breathable lime finish such as Marmorino is a good match. We survey the condition of the plaster first.

What finish suits a cob cottage near Exeter?

A breathable finish such as limewash or clay plaster. Cob needs to release moisture, and a sealed coating can hold it in.

Do you plaster rental flats and student lets in Exeter?

Yes. For lets we would usually recommend a durable finish that is easy to repair, and we will tell you plainly if a decorative finish is not a sensible choice.

Do you travel to Exeter for Venetian plastering?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham, and larger jobs are planned in blocks of days. Dates are agreed once the sample and price are signed off.
