Norwich is one of England’s best preserved medieval cities, and that shapes almost every job we would quote there.

The homes we would be plastering in Norwich

The old city is built around the Norman cathedral, with its tall spire, and the castle on its mound. Between them run the medieval lanes, among them the cobbled Elm Hill with its timber framed houses. Flint is the signature local material, used for the walls of the many medieval churches and for older houses and boundary walls. Georgian townhouses, with proper brick fronts and tall windows, line streets such as Surrey Street and the Crescent.

Outside the old walls the city grew in the Victorian period, and the best known result is the Golden Triangle, the grid of terraces between Unthank Road, Earlham Road and Newmarket Road. Neighbouring areas such as Thorpe Hamlet and Heigham have more Victorian terraces, and Eaton has larger, leafier houses. Norwich was long a centre of shoemaking and the Colman’s mustard works, and some of the former factories and warehouses have become flats.

Newer homes and student housing around the University of East Anglia, and recent developments on the city edges, are mostly plasterboard and block.

Medieval flint and timber, Georgian brick, Victorian terraces and new flats all need a different approach, so we survey before we recommend a finish.

Finishes that suit Norwich homes

  • Limewash for medieval and flint walled houses, where a chalky, breathable surface suits thick, uneven walls and timber.
  • Marmorino for Georgian rooms and Golden Triangle terraces, giving a calm, polished lime finish.
  • Polished plaster for converted factories and new flats, where flat walls can carry a deep sheen.
  • Clay plaster for bedrooms and studies where a natural, matt surface is wanted.

For a bathroom or wet room, use tadelakt or microcement on a waterproofed wall, since Venetian plaster is not what we recommend inside a shower.

How a Venetian plastering job in Norwich runs

It starts with photos and then a survey of the walls. We check the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, how the room is used, and access and protection. Old walls in the centre may have damp or repairs hidden under paint, and if a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixing first, we say so plainly.

When you approve a sample and the price, we agree dates. The plaster is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham, from 48 house colours or any NCS reference. Norwich is a long way from Birmingham, so the work is planned in blocks of days. The team stays on the job and lays each coat in order, rather than travelling back and forth.

Parking in the medieval centre is limited, with narrow lanes and some pedestrian streets, so tell us early about permits and loading. Our Venetian plaster installation page lists the finishes we lay.

Listed buildings, designers and the trade

Many Norwich houses are listed, so check what consent you need before changing historic plaster. Architects and designers can read the specify page, and builders and decorators can open a trade account. Our journal explains lime and acrylic Venetian plaster in plain terms. Questions about Venetian plastering in Norwich

Do you travel to Norwich for Venetian plastering?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham and plan the job in blocks of days. Dates are agreed once the sample and price are signed off.

Which finish suits a Golden Triangle terrace?

Marmorino is a good choice for solid Victorian walls, because it is lime based and breathable. We survey for damp before pricing.

Can Venetian plaster go on flint and timber framed walls?

A breathable lime finish such as limewash or Marmorino can, once the wall has been surveyed. Acrylic finishes form a film, which is not ideal for old walls.

Can I buy the plaster for my own decorator in Norwich?

Yes. We tint it to your colour and send it tracked, with the base coats and wax.
