Venetian plastering in Islington

Marmorino, limewash and cornice work for Georgian and Victorian houses, tinted in Birmingham and laid in Islington by our own applicators.

Zavoré provides Venetian plastering in Islington for Georgian terraces, Victorian houses and converted warehouse flats. We are based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel to London to lay authentic Italian lime based Venetian plaster, Marmorino, limewash, cornice and coving and other decorative finishes. Order a sample board, or send photos of your rooms and the postcode to sales@zavore.co.uk.

Islington has a great deal of Georgian and Victorian housing, so much of what we are asked about is how to decorate old walls without harming them.

Georgian streets and warehouse conversions

Around the Angel, Barnsbury and Canonbury, the terraces and squares were built in the late Georgian and Regency years in London stock brick, often with stucco ground floors and tall sash windows. Barnsbury Square, Gibson Square, Canonbury Square and Duncan Terrace are good examples, and Upper Street runs through the middle with its shops, theatres and restaurants. Large parts of the borough are conservation areas, and many of the houses are listed.

North and east, Highbury and Holloway have a great deal of Victorian housing, in brick terraces and villas, and some of the larger houses have been divided into flats. Clerkenwell, at the southern end of the borough, has old workshops and warehouses that have been converted into loft apartments and offices.

Plenty of Georgian rooms have lost their original plaster details over the years, or have been repaired with modern materials. A good finish starts with finding out what is behind the wall and whether it has been stripped back, patched or boarded over.

Finishes that suit Islington interiors

  • Marmorino for Georgian and Regency drawing rooms and halls, since the lime keeps older solid walls breathing and the soft sheen suits well proportioned rooms.
  • Cornice and coving to repair or restore mouldings in period rooms, matched to the style of the house.
  • Limewash for stairwells, bedrooms and basement kitchens in terraces, where a soft, chalky depth of colour looks right.
  • Concrete effect or polished plaster for Clerkenwell loft apartments with exposed brick and large windows.
  • Tadelakt for bathrooms with a waterproofed wall, as Venetian plaster is not for showers.

How an Islington job works

London jobs are planned in blocks of days, so the applicators stay on site and lay each coat in order without going back and forth to Birmingham.

First we look at photos and rough measurements, then survey the rooms before we quote. The survey covers the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and movement, how the rooms are used, and access and protection. Basements and garden floors in Georgian terraces deserve a close look at damp, and we say so plainly if something has to be fixed first. When you have approved the sample and price, we agree dates. Your plaster is tinted to your sample in Birmingham, in one of 48 house colours or any NCS reference.

Many Islington streets have resident permit parking, and terraces often have steps and narrow halls, so it helps to tell us about access early. If the house is listed or in a conservation area, check with the council what consent is needed. Our guide to lime plaster cornice in period London homes explains more, and the Venetian plaster installation page lists every finish we lay.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Islington

Which finish suits a Georgian terrace in Barnsbury?

Marmorino is a strong choice for the main rooms, because it is lime based and works with older plaster. Limewash is a softer option for stairs and bedrooms.

Can you restore cornice in an Islington townhouse?

Yes. We install and repair plaster cornice and coving, and we would look at what remains of the original mouldings before suggesting how to match them.

Does Venetian plaster work in a Clerkenwell loft apartment?

It can, on walls that are sound and flat. Concrete effect and polished plaster both suit the loft look, and we survey the walls first.

Can I buy materials for my own decorator in Islington?

Yes. We tint the plaster to your colour and send it by tracked delivery, together with the other materials the decorator needs.
