Gloucester began as a Roman town, and its cathedral and the old crossing of Northgate, Southgate, Eastgate and Westgate streets still shape the centre.
The Victorian docks are a big part of the story. The tall brick warehouses beside the basin were built for the grain trade and have been converted into apartments, offices and restaurants. Rooms like these have high ceilings, exposed brick and big plain walls, and they ask for a finish with a confident, modern feel.
Away from the centre, Kingsholm, Barton and Tredworth and many other districts are made up of Victorian and Edwardian brick terraces, with interwar and postwar housing farther out and newer estates on the edges, towards the Severn Vale and the Cotswold escarpment. The villages around add stone cottages and farmhouses.
In short, the walls range from soft old brick to flat modern board, and each wants different preparation.
We begin with photos and a few questions, then survey the walls. We look at the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and movement, and how the room is used. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixing, we say so before you spend a penny on the decorative coats.
Once the sample and price are signed off we agree dates, and for bigger jobs the work is planned in blocks of days so the team can lay each coat in order. Venetian plaster goes on in thin layers with drying time between them, so skimming, electrics and joinery should be finished first. Around the Docks and the city centre, parking and loading space can be tight, so tell us early about permits and access.

Yes. These buildings combine brick, concrete and newer partitions, so we survey each wall and prepare it to suit. Concrete effect and polished plaster are common choices for large plain surfaces.
A breathable lime finish such as Marmorino is a good match for solid brick. It lets the wall release moisture where an acrylic coating forms a film.
