Cirencester sits at the heart of the Cotswolds, and the walls here are mostly stone. That shapes almost every decision we would make.
Cirencester was Corinium in Roman times, one of the larger towns in Roman Britain, and the medieval wool trade later made the town wealthy. That wealth is still visible in the great parish church of St John the Baptist beside the Market Place, and in the Georgian town houses of the streets around it, built in honey coloured Cotswold limestone with stone slate roofs.
Behind those fronts, walls are thick and built with lime mortar, so they take in and release moisture. Modern coatings that seal a stone wall can trap damp and cause trouble later, which is why the choice of finish matters more here than the colour does. Parts of the centre are conservation area and some buildings are listed, so a listed interior can need consent from the council before changes are made.
Beyond the centre, Cirencester has Victorian terraces, interwar and postwar housing and newer estates, and the villages and farms across the surrounding Cotswolds add manor houses, mill conversions, cottages and barns, many with flagstone floors, low beams and walls that are far from straight.
We start with photos and measurements, then survey. We check the condition of the existing plaster, how flat and sound each wall is, damp, cracks and movement, and the access to the room. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem sorting first, we tell you before you commit.
When the sample and price are signed off we agree dates. Please tell us about gates, narrow drives, steps and parking. Because the work is some way from Birmingham, we plan it in blocks of days so the team stays and lays each coat in order. Old stone houses can be cold and slow to dry, so heating should stay gently on while the coats cure.
Many country houses have a builder or decorator already on site. We tint the plaster, base coats and wax to your colour and send them tracked, or your decorator can learn the technique on one of our courses in Birmingham. Trade accounts are available too.
