Swindon is a town that was made by the railway and then remade by growth, so its homes are much younger and more varied than most people expect.

A railway town and a growing one

Swindon’s story starts with the Great Western Railway. The company built its works here, and the Railway Village was laid out as terraced housing for the workforce, with the former works buildings now home to a museum and a designer outlet. Nearby, the Old Town stands on the hill with older streets, a market square and Georgian and Victorian buildings that came before the railway grew.

Around those two cores, Victorian and Edwardian terraces were added as the works expanded, and then Swindon grew fast after the Second World War as people moved out from London. That left large areas of interwar, postwar and later estates, and in recent years big new developments have spread across the edges of the town.

So most of Swindon’s walls are one of two kinds. There are the solid brick and stone walls of the railway streets and the Old Town, which have been patched many times. And there are the plasterboard and blockwork walls of newer houses and flats, which are flat and regular but need correct preparation.

Finishes that suit Swindon homes

  • Polished plaster for newer houses and apartments. Flat walls carry a deep, smooth sheen well, as long as board joints are reinforced and primed first.
  • Marmorino for railway cottages and Victorian terraces. It is lime based and breathable, so it suits older solid walls and softens their small irregularities.
  • Concrete effect for offices, retail units, cafes and open plan living rooms.
  • Metallic finishes and liquid metal for a reception wall, a bar or a feature chimney breast.
  • Microcement for bathrooms and kitchens, because we do not recommend Venetian plaster inside a shower.

How a Venetian plastering job in Swindon runs

We start with photos and measurements and then survey the walls. We check what they are made of, whether they are flat and sound, and whether damp, cracks or movement need attention first. For new builds we look at the board joints and what primer has been used. If a wall needs skimming or stripping, we say so before you commit.

Dates are agreed once the sample and price are signed off. Bigger jobs are planned in blocks of days so the team can stay and lay each coat in order. Plaster is built in thin layers with drying time between them, so electricians, joiners and skimmers should finish before we begin.

Businesses, developers and your own decorator

Swindon has many offices, retail units and new housing schemes. Our page for designers and architects explains how to specify a finish, and trade accounts simplify repeat orders. If your decorator is applying the plaster, we send it tinted and tracked, and our courses in Birmingham teach the method.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Swindon

Can you apply Venetian plaster to a new build house in Swindon?

Yes. Plasterboard needs its joints reinforced and the right primer first, and the base coats then make the wall flat enough for the finish.

What finish suits the Railway Village cottages?

Solid walls in older terraces are best with a breathable lime finish such as Marmorino. A sealed acrylic coating can hold moisture in an old wall.

Do you plaster commercial interiors in Swindon?

Yes. Offices, shops, cafes and reception areas can all take decorative plaster. We survey the walls and agree access and working hours with you first.

Do you travel to Swindon for Venetian plastering?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham. Bigger jobs are planned in blocks of days, with dates agreed after the sample and price are signed off.
