Venetian plastering in Carlisle

Breathable lime plaster, Marmorino and limewash, tinted to your colour in Birmingham and applied in Carlisle by our own applicators.

Zavoré offers Venetian plastering in Carlisle for Victorian villas, terraces, flats, hotels and shops. We are based in Birmingham, we supply authentic Italian lime based Venetian plaster, and our own applicators travel to apply it, tinted to the colour on your approved sample. The first step is a sample board, then photos of your walls and your postcode sent to sales@zavore.co.uk.

We plan Carlisle installs as a block of days. The applicators stay on the job and lay each coat in order, and we agree dates once the sample and price are signed off.

The homes and buildings of Carlisle

Carlisle is a border city, and its old buildings are built of local red sandstone. The castle and cathedral are the best known, and the Citadel, a pair of drum towers beside the railway station, belongs to the early nineteenth century. Georgian houses line parts of Lowther Street and the streets around it, and Hadrian’s Wall runs to the north of the city.

The Victorian railway made Carlisle a manufacturing and trading centre, and much of the housing comes from that time. Denton Holme and Caldewgate have terraces built near the mills, Warwick Road has Victorian terraces and villas, and Stanwix, north of the River Eden, has larger Victorian and Edwardian houses. Beyond them are interwar and postwar estates, and newer housing on the edges.

Carlisle has also seen serious flooding from its rivers in recent years, and some homes beside the Eden, the Caldew and the Petteril have been repaired and refitted. A wall that has been wet must be dry all the way through before any decorative plaster goes on, and we will not rush that step.

Red sandstone and Victorian brick are solid, absorbent materials, so a breathable lime finish is the natural fit.

Finishes that suit Carlisle homes

  • Marmorino for Victorian and Edwardian rooms in Stanwix and Warwick Road, a breathable lime plaster with a soft sheen that suits tall ceilings and original joinery.
  • Limewash for sandstone cottages, terrace bedrooms and stairwells, giving a chalky matt surface without trapping moisture.
  • Plaster cornice and coving to install or match mouldings in period rooms, so ceilings and refinished walls look as one.
  • Polished plaster for newer apartments, hotel rooms and shops, where flat walls take a smooth, reflective finish.

For bathrooms we suggest tadelakt or microcement over a waterproofed wall, and we do not recommend Venetian plaster inside a shower.

How a Venetian plastering job in Carlisle runs

Send photos, rough measurements and the postcode first, and small questions can often be answered from the pictures. Before we price we survey the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and movement, how the room is used, plus access and protection. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem solved, including after flooding, we tell you plainly.

After you approve the sample and price, we agree dates. Your plaster is tinted in Birmingham to match the sample before it makes the journey. Thin coats need time to dry, and cold, damp rooms are slow, so a steady gentle heat and finished trades make the job run well.

Streets of terraces can have limited parking, and listed buildings in the centre may have rules about interior work, so tell us early about access and check consent with the council. The Venetian plaster installation page sets out the whole service.

Hotels, shops and your own decorator

Hotels, bars and shops in the centre can read our guide to commercial Venetian plaster, and designers and architects will find more on our specification page. If a decorator in Carlisle will lay the plaster, we tint it and send it tracked with base coats and wax. They can learn the craft on a Venetian plaster course in Birmingham, and trade accounts are available.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Carlisle

Do you travel to Carlisle for Venetian plastering?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham, and because of the distance we plan the job in blocks of days so the team can stay and lay each coat in order.

Can you plaster a house that has been flooded?

Only once the walls have fully dried and any damage is repaired. We survey first and tell you plainly what has to happen before decorative plaster goes on.

What suits a red sandstone or Victorian brick house?

Marmorino or limewash. Both are lime based and breathable, which suits solid absorbent walls better than a coating that forms a film.

Can I buy Venetian plaster for my decorator?

Yes. We tint it to your colour and send it tracked, with base coats and wax.
