Venetian plastering in Belgravia

Venetian plaster, Marmorino, limewash and cornice for Cubitt townhouses, lateral flats and mews homes, tinted in Birmingham and laid by our own applicators.

Zavoré offers Venetian plastering in Belgravia for stucco townhouses, lateral flats and mews houses. We are based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel to lay lime Venetian plaster, Marmorino, limewash, microcement and decorative cornice, with every batch tinted to your approved colour before it leaves us. The first step is a sample board or a set of photos of the rooms.

A Belgravia job is booked as one block of days. The team stays put and lays the coats in sequence, without trips back to Birmingham in between.

Cubitt’s white stucco and the mews behind it

Belgravia was built from the 1820s on land owned by the Grosvenor family, much of it by the builder Thomas Cubitt. The result is one of the most uniform districts in London, with long terraces of white painted stucco, columned porches and iron balconies around Belgrave Square, Eaton Square and Chester Square. Belgrave Square is home to several embassies.

The houses are tall, with formal rooms on the ground and first floors, bedrooms above, and lower ground floors beneath the pavement. Many have been divided into flats over the years, some sideways into lateral apartments, and some put back together as single houses. Behind the squares run mews of former stables and coach houses, now homes, and the shops and restaurants of Motcomb Street and Elizabeth Street give the area its village streets.

Behind the stucco the walls are solid brick, usually with lime plaster, deep cornices and tall windows. Lower ground floors can be prone to damp, and mews houses vary widely inside, from old brick to modern linings.

Finishes that suit Belgravia houses

  • Venetian plaster for first floor drawing rooms, where tall walls and big windows show off a polished, layered finish, provided the walls are flat.
  • Marmorino for halls, stairs and bedrooms. It is lime based and breathable, which suits the solid walls of a stucco house.
  • Limewash for mews houses, where a softer, chalky wall feels right in smaller, lower rooms.
  • Cornice and coving where original mouldings need repair or a missing run needs matching.
  • Microcement for lower ground kitchens and bathrooms once any damp has been dealt with, giving one continuous surface on walls and floors.

How a Venetian plastering job in Belgravia runs

Begin by sending photos and rough measurements, and we will arrange a survey. We check the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and any movement, how each room is used, and how stairs, floors and joinery will be protected. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem sorting first, we say so plainly.

Once you approve a sample and the price, we agree dates. The plaster is tinted to that sample in Birmingham, chosen from our 48 house colours or any NCS reference, so the colour is set before the van leaves.

Belgravia is a conservation area, many houses are listed, and leases often require the freeholder’s approval before alterations, so check what applies to your home before dates are booked. Parking is controlled and mews are narrow, so tell us early where a van can stop. The Venetian plaster installation page explains more.

Designers, contractors and decorators

Where an interior designer or main contractor is leading the work, our designers and architects page explains how we fit in with a specification and programme. Decorators can buy tinted materials from us with tracked delivery, and trade accounts are available.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Belgravia

Which finish suits a stucco house in Belgravia?

Lime finishes suit the solid brick walls behind the stucco. Marmorino gives a soft sheen, and polished Venetian plaster gives more depth where the walls are flat.

Is Belgravia a conservation area?

Yes, and many of its houses are listed. Interior changes to a listed house can need consent, and your lease may also ask for the freeholder’s approval.

Can you plaster a mews house in Belgravia?

Yes. Mews houses vary a great deal inside, so we survey first to see whether we are working on old brick or newer linings.

Do you travel to Belgravia from Birmingham?

Yes. Our own applicators come to you, and the work runs as a block of days once the sample and price are approved.
