Why Plaster Cornice

The detail that finishes a room

Fine plasterwork is where a room is finished, the line where wall meets ceiling and the detail that gives a period interior its grace.

Whether restoring original cornice or fitting new, we work with care for the character of the building. Each project is fitted and finished by our own artisans to the standard your address deserves.

Questions & Answers

More questions, answered

Do you survey the wall before quoting for cornice or coving?
Yes. We survey before pricing, looking at the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, how the room is used, access and protection. Small questions can often be answered from photos first. We say plainly if a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixing first.
Who installs cornice and coving near me?
Our own artisans restore and fit every project. They travel from our Birmingham base to homes and businesses across the UK. Call 07592 929191, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm, or send photos, rough measurements and your postcode through our contact page.
Do you install cornice and coving across the whole of the UK?
Yes, our own team travels from Birmingham to jobs anywhere in the UK. On jobs further away the work is planned in blocks of days, so the team stays on site and works through each stage in order rather than travelling back and forth. See every area we cover.
How long does cornice and coving installation take?
It depends on the length of run, the condition of the existing plasterwork and the profile, so the timescale is set out after the survey. Dates are agreed once the design and price are signed off. Ask us when you call and we will explain how your project would be planned.
Can thick layers of paint be removed from old cornice?
Yes. Decades of paint can be cleaned back so the detail shows again. Cracked and broken runs are repaired and missing sections rebuilt, then blended in so the join cannot be seen. Our guide to Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian coving explains the period styles.
Can you add matching cornice to an extension?
Yes. A new extension or a knocked through room can carry the same cornice as the rest of the house, with new lengths made from the profile already there so new and old run on as one. We take the profile at the survey.
Do you fit ceiling roses?
Yes, ceiling roses are sized to the room and the light fitting. They are fitted by our own artisans along with cornice, coving and panel mouldings. Read our guide to plaster ceiling roses before you choose.
What are panel mouldings?
Panel mouldings are applied plaster frames that turn a plain wall into a classical room. We fit them alongside cornice and ceiling roses so the whole scheme works together. See our plaster cornice and coving page for the range.
Will a repair to my cornice show?
No, the repair is blended in so the join cannot be seen. New lengths are made from the existing profile so they run on from the old. We judge the condition of your plasterwork at the survey and tell you honestly what is needed.
Can you work on listed buildings and heritage sites?
Yes, we work on period homes and heritage buildings with care for the character of the building and what is already there. Hotels, restaurants and offices in period buildings are also within our work. Contact us through our contact page with photos.
Can you fit coving in a new build?
Yes. We fit cornice and coving in extensions and new builds as well as period homes, and work with your architect and designer on the profile. A survey covers access and how the ceiling is built.
What do I need to do before cornice is fitted?
Mainly clear access to the room and agree the profile. At the survey we check the walls and ceiling, and tell you plainly if anything needs fixing first. Our team protects the space throughout the work.
Is there any aftercare once the cornice is finished?
Our team protects the space throughout and hands over a finish ready to enjoy. Ask at handover how to look after your plasterwork, or call 07592 929191 with any questions afterwards.
