Lime Venetian plaster, limewash and Marmorino, tinted to your colour in Birmingham and laid on Barnsley walls by our own applicators.
Zavoré provides Venetian plastering in Barnsley for stone terraces, village cottages, Pennine farmhouses and new housing. We are based in Birmingham, our own applicators travel to Barnsley to lay every finish, and the plaster is tinted to your approved sample before it leaves us. The easy first step is a sample board, or a few photos of the walls emailed with your postcode to sales@zavore.co.uk.
Barnsley is a long way from Birmingham, so we plan the work in blocks of days. The team stays and lays each coat in order.
Barnsley is a former coal mining town on the edge of the Pennines, and its buildings are mostly of local stone and brick. In the centre, the Town Hall is a handsome Art Deco building in pale stone, and the Victorian market hall still anchors the shopping streets. The Glass Works is the modern retail and leisure development at the heart of the town centre.
Around the centre, terraced rows built for mining families fill many of the older suburbs and the villages of the borough, such as Worsbrough, Hoyland and Darton. They are solid walled, often in stone, with small rooms and plenty of repairs behind the plaster. Elsecar, south of the town, grew as a model village for ironworks and collieries and keeps many of its stone buildings.
To the west, towards the hills, are Penistone and the villages around it. This is gritstone country, with old farmhouses, barn conversions and stone cottages. Country houses such as Cannon Hall, a Georgian house at Cawthorne, and Wentworth Castle at Stainborough show the grander side of the borough. Newer estates and flats now stand on the edges of the town and on reclaimed colliery sites.
For stone and brick walls like these, how the wall deals with moisture matters. If it cannot breathe, damp builds up behind the finish.
For kitchens and shower rooms, we suggest microcement instead, because Venetian plaster is not what we recommend in a shower.
It begins with photos and a survey. We check what the walls are made of, how flat and sound they are, any cracks, damp or movement, how the room is used, and how we protect floors and get in. Stone walls in hillside villages can hold damp, so we look closely and tell you if something needs fixing first.
Once the sample and price are approved, we set dates. The plaster is tinted in Birmingham to match the approved sample, using the 48 house colours or any NCS reference. Layers are thin and need time to dry between coats, and cold, damp rooms slow that down, so heating helps. See our guide to preparing walls before work starts.
Village lanes can be narrow, so mention access, steps and parking. Read more about what we lay on the Venetian plaster installation page, and see every area we cover.

A breathable lime finish such as limewash or Marmorino suits thick stone walls. It lets moisture out, whereas an acrylic coating forms a film.
Often yes, after a survey. Clay plaster and lime based finishes both work well, but we first check flatness, damp and the wall make up.
