Lime and marble burnished to a stone shine, laid by our own team in Nottingham rooms where the walls are flat enough to carry it.
Polished plaster in Nottingham suits the city's tall, formal rooms, and Zavoré installs it with its own team. We are based in Birmingham and our applicators travel to Nottingham to lay it. Polished plaster is slaked lime and finely ground marble, trowelled on in thin coats and burnished until the wall reflects. A call, a few photos of the walls and your postcode are enough to start, and a sample board follows once we know the room.
The honest question in every Nottingham house is the same. How flat is the wall? A polished surface shows every hollow, so the survey comes before the colour.
Nottingham has plenty of the rooms polished plaster was made for. The Park Estate and Mapperley Park are full of Victorian villas with generous hallways and stairwells. Castle Gate and Low Pavement keep their Georgian townhouses. The red brick lace warehouses of the Lace Market have been turned into flats and offices with tall walls.
Tall flat walls are a gift to a burnished finish, but old houses carry a century of patching. A villa wall that has been rewired, lost a chimney and been skimmed three times will not be flat, and a reflective surface tells on every repair. On the survey we say plainly if a wall wants skimming or boarding out first. On sound new plasterboard the work is usually straightforward, provided the joints are reinforced and the right primer goes on.
Polished plaster is lime, so it does not seal a solid wall behind a film the way an acrylic look alike does. It does want a wall that stays still. Solid brick and sound board are fine. A flexing timber partition or loose lath is not, and there we would suggest marmorino instead.
Nottingham sits on soft sandstone, and many older houses have cellars cut into it. A cold, damp cellar slows drying and is no place for a burnish, so we would not polish below ground until any damp has been dealt with.
If you want to see how the material is built before you choose, read about our polished plaster finishes. In Nottingham properties it earns its place in a handful of rooms.
Bathroom walls are fine once the plaster is waxed or sealed, and there is no grout line for mould to sit in. Inside a shower enclosure or a steam room we would not use it. That is the job of tadelakt in Nottingham.
We survey the walls first. That means what they are made of, how flat and sound they are, any damp or movement, how the room is used, and access and protection. Small questions can often be answered from photos. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixing first, we say so before anything is priced.
Colour is agreed on a sample. Polished plaster comes in 48 house colours or any NCS reference, and it is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham. Deep colours show the most movement. Very pale ones read closer to a smooth painted wall with a sheen.
Each wall is finished in one go, because the burnish has a short window on any patch. Nottingham is not next door to our Birmingham base, so a job is planned in blocks of days. The team stays on site and lays each coat in order, and dates are agreed once the sample and price are signed off. The steps are set out on the Venetian plaster installation page.
Some people bring their own decorator. The shop sells veneziano plaster, primer and bees wax, tinted before it ships with tracked delivery across the UK. Decorators who buy regularly can ask about a trade account.
We will be straight with you. This is the hardest finish we sell, and most first attempts read as textured paint. If you want to learn it properly, our Venetian plaster courses in Birmingham are the place. If it is your own hallway and you get one go, let us do it.
A burnished wall is one choice among many. For seamless floors and showers look at microcement in Nottingham, and for a breathable wall on solid brick try limewash in Nottingham or marmorino in Nottingham. Soft matt walls are covered under clay plaster in Nottingham, the cool grey look under concrete effect plaster in Nottingham, and a shimmer under liquid metal in Nottingham. The wet room answer is tadelakt in Nottingham. Our whole range sits under decorative specialists in Nottingham, and the area guide covers Venetian plastering in Nottingham.
Often it is a natural match for the room, because hallways and stairwells give you tall, flat, uninterrupted walls. The catch is the plaster beneath. If the hall has been patched over the years, we survey it and tell you whether it wants skimming first. A reflective finish will show every dip.
Yes. Sound new plasterboard is usually the easy case, as long as the joints are reinforced and the right primer goes on. Flatness still matters, so we look at the finished boards before we agree a price.
On the walls, yes, waxed or sealed. Inside the shower enclosure we would use tadelakt, which is built for running water. We will tell you which walls we would and would not polish when you send photographs.
Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham, and the job is planned in blocks of days so the team stays on site. We survey first, then agree the sample and price before dates are set.
