Microcement in Nottingham

A joint free surface across floors, walls and showers, laid by our own team and planned around what sits under the finish in your Nottingham home.

Home/Microcement/Nottingham

Microcement in Nottingham is a thin, hand trowelled coating that runs across a floor, up a wall and round a shower as one surface, with no grout lines and no joints. Zavoré is based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel to Nottingham to install it. Start with a call, or send a photo of the bathroom or floor, because with seamless finishes the base underneath decides everything.

Most Nottingham enquiries begin with a bathroom. We ask what is under the tiles, whether the floor moves, and how the room is waterproofed. A sample board follows once we know the surface can take it.

Victorian terraces, canal side flats and what sits under the finish

Nottingham is a city of brick terraces, from Sherwood and Lenton to Sneinton and Radford, alongside Victorian villas on the Park Estate and in Mapperley Park. Newer apartments have gone up around the canal and the river Trent, and the old lace warehouses of the Lace Market have become flats. Each of those gives microcement a different base.

In a terrace the bathroom is often upstairs or in a loft conversion, with a timber floor. Timber that flexes will crack a rigid coating however good the material, so the floor is stiffened and boarded first. In a newer apartment the floor is usually a screed on a slab, which is a steadier base, but the screed has to be dry all the way through, not only on top. Cold, damp rooms slow everything down.

Plasterboard walls need their joints reinforced and the right primer. Old solid walls are another matter. A sealed film on a breathable brick wall can trap moisture, so in an older house we sometimes suggest a lime built finish for the walls and keep microcement for the wet areas.

Wet rooms, en suites and floors in Nottingham homes

The reason people choose microcement finishes is the absence of joints. A bathroom floor that turns up the wall and into the shower with no grout is calmer to look at and easier to clean than tile. In Nottingham the most common requests are these.

  • Loft and first floor en suites on a stiffened, tanked base
  • Bathrooms where tired tiles are to be covered rather than ripped out
  • Open plan ground floors in extended terraces, with no thresholds
  • Shower benches, niches and reveals
  • Kitchen worktops and stair treads
  • Bars, cafes and shops in Hockley and the city centre that need a calm, hard wearing floor

Hand laid microcement is never one flat grey. If you want a dead uniform sheet, buy a sheet product. The cloudy movement is the point, and the sealer then sets the sheen from matt to gloss.

Three places microcement goes wrong, and how we avoid them

A microcement surface is only as good as its primer, its mesh and its sealer. A failure is almost always in one of those three, rather than in the material in the middle.

The primer has to match what it is gripping, whether that is tile, screed or board. The mesh goes into corners, junctions and anywhere two materials meet, and movement joints in the structure are carried through the finish rather than covered. The sealer is what makes the surface washable. The waterproofing behind a shower still has to be done properly, exactly as it would under tile.

How a microcement job in Nottingham runs

We survey the floor or wall before we price. That covers the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, how the room is used, access and protection. Photos often answer the small questions, and we say plainly if a floor needs stiffening, screeding or a damp problem fixing first.

Colour and finish are agreed on a sample, and the material is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham. A seamless floor has to be laid wet in one go, so a Nottingham job is planned in blocks of days with the team staying on site. Dates follow once the sample and price are signed off. The process is on the microcement installation page.

Seamless lime finishes from our shop

Zavoré installs microcement with its own team. For people who want to buy materials and use their own decorator, the shop carries lime built finishes that give the same seamless look. Pastellone is a lime and marble finish for floors and walls. Beton stucco is a concrete look wall finish, and primer and sealer are there too. Everything ships tinted with tracked delivery across the UK, and buyers who order often can ask about a trade account.

A confident decorator can learn beton stucco on a board. A bathroom or a seamless floor is the job we would ask you to leave to us.

More finishes in Nottingham

Seamless is one route among several. For a burnished wall in a Park Estate hallway, see polished plaster in Nottingham. Inside the shower, the older answer is tadelakt in Nottingham. Breathable colour for brick walls comes from limewash in Nottingham and marmorino in Nottingham, and a soft matt look from clay plaster in Nottingham. The wall finish cousin of this floor is concrete effect plaster in Nottingham, and liquid metal in Nottingham adds a shimmer. Everything we install sits under decorative specialists in Nottingham, and the area guide covers Venetian plastering in Nottingham.

Questions about microcement in Nottingham

Can microcement go over the old tiles in a Nottingham terrace bathroom?

Usually, yes. The tiles must be firmly stuck, degreased and keyed, with the grout lines filled and the surface reinforced. Any drummy tiles are lifted and made good first. If the tiles are loose or the floor moves, they come up instead. We look on the survey and tell you which it is.

Can I have microcement in a loft conversion en suite?

Yes, if the floor is right. A timber loft floor that flexes will crack a rigid coating, so it is stiffened and boarded first, and the shower area needs proper waterproofing behind the finish. We say honestly if the build up is not suitable.

Will microcement suit a new apartment with a screed floor?

Often it suits it well, because a screed on a slab is a steady base. It has to be dry all the way through before anything goes down, and movement joints are carried through the finish rather than covered.

Is microcement waterproof in a shower?

The sealer makes the surface washable, but the structure still needs tanking behind it, exactly as it would under tile. Microcement is a surface, not a replacement for waterproofing.
