Why Mosaic

A thousand pieces, one picture

Mosaic is one of the oldest decorative crafts and still one of the most striking, a surface of colour and light built piece by piece.

From a single splashback to a full floor, a pattern, a picture or a crest, each design is made for its space alone and laid by our own artisans to the standard your address deserves.

Questions & Answers

More questions, answered

Do you survey the wall before quoting for mosaic?
Yes. We survey before pricing, looking at the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, how the room is used, access and protection. Small questions can often be answered from photos first. We say plainly if a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixing first.
Who installs mosaics near me?
Our own artisans lay every design piece by piece. They travel from our Birmingham base to homes and businesses across the UK. Call 07592 929191, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm, or send photos, rough measurements and your postcode through our contact page.
Do you install mosaics across the whole of the UK?
Yes, our own team travels from Birmingham to jobs anywhere in the UK. On jobs further away the work is planned in blocks of days, so the team stays on site and works through each stage in order rather than travelling back and forth. See every area we cover.
How long does mosaic installation take?
It depends on the size of the area, the pattern and the materials, so the timescale is set out after the survey. Dates are agreed once the design and price are signed off. Ask us when you call and we will explain how your project would be planned.
Which mosaic is best for a shower or wet room?
Glass mosaic is the usual choice because it is non porous, and it carries strong colour and shimmer. The wall behind a shower must also be properly prepared and waterproofed. We advise at the survey. Read about mosaic bathroom tiles.
Can I use marble mosaic in a bathroom?
Yes, marble mosaic is natural stone, warmer and softer in colour than glass, and it is sealed in wet or busy areas. We advise which suits your room at the survey. Glass is non porous, so it suits pools, showers and wet areas more naturally.
What is smalti?
Smalti is glass made specially for mosaic, with a deep, jewel like colour. It sits alongside glass, marble, stone and ceramic mosaic as a choice for bespoke work. We advise on the right material for the space and how it will be used.
Can you install a mosaic splashback?
Yes. Behind a hob, a sink or a bar, a mosaic splashback is a small area with a big effect. Each design is made for the space and laid by our own artisans. Read our guide to mosaic splashbacks.
Can a mosaic floor or border go in a hallway?
Yes, entrance halls and hallways suit a mosaic floor or inlaid border that greets everyone who comes in. The floor must be sound and flat, which we check at the survey. See our mosaics page.
Can you make a picture, crest or logo in mosaic?
Yes. From a pattern to a picture or a crest, each design is made for its space alone. Logos and crests in mosaic suit hotels, restaurants and reception areas. Designs are drawn to scale and approved before work starts.
Can mosaic be used in a pool?
Yes, mosaic suits pools and leisure spaces, and glass mosaic is non porous. Hotel bathrooms and spas suit it too. We survey the structure and plan the work with your main contractor before pricing. See all our installations.
Does the surface need preparing before mosaic is laid?
Yes. The surface must be sound, flat and dry, and in wet areas properly waterproofed. At the survey we check the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and movement, and tell you plainly if anything needs fixing first.
Can mosaic go into a period or listed property?
Yes, we take on cottages, period homes and heritage sites, approached with care for what is already there. We judge each space at the survey and tell you what is possible.
How do I look after a mosaic?
Care depends on the material. Glass mosaic is non porous, while marble mosaic is sealed in wet or busy areas. Our artisans can advise on keeping your mosaic looking right at handover. Call 07592 929191 with any questions afterwards.
