Venetian plastering training for London decorators, plasterers and homeowners is taught at the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham, not in the capital. If you live or work in London, you travel to Birmingham for a 3 or 4 day course and bring the skill home with you.
It suits painters and decorators who want a premium service, plasterers looking to offer more than a skim finish, designers who want to understand what they specify, career changers, and homeowners who would like to learn the craft properly. You do not need any experience to start.
London is one of the busiest places in the country for decorative plaster, and it rewards people who can offer it properly. The work sits in older homes and in newer ones, and the two call for different finishes.
The city is full of Georgian townhouses and Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and areas such as Islington, Kensington, Chelsea and Notting Hill are well known for them. Solid old walls like these were built to breathe, which is why a lime based finish such as Marmorino is so often the sensible choice. It lets the wall manage moisture instead of sealing it in.
Mansion blocks, mews houses and converted warehouses bring a different brief. Owners tend to want a calm, flat, polished surface, and polished plaster suits straight walls very well. Newer apartment buildings ask for much the same, while bathrooms and wet rooms call for tadelakt or microcement.
Then there is hospitality and commercial work. Restaurants, hotels, bars and offices are refitted often, and designers who specify decorative walls need applicators they can rely on. A decorator or plasterer who can add Venetian plaster to a normal offer is selling something many general trades simply cannot supply.
If you are new to Venetian plaster, start with the Beginner Course. If you have already trained or work on site, the Advanced Course or 1 to 1 Training will usually fit better. Current dates are on the Zavoré training page, where you can also register interest if none are showing.
The days run from 10am to 5pm, with up to six students on the group courses. The Beginner Course covers the theory, preparation and base coats, a wide range of textures, and the finishes Marmorino, polished plaster and metallics from bucket to burnish. The Advanced Course goes into artificial rock, stencil work, vein work, high gloss polishing and colour blending. If you already run a busy London business and cannot spare a long stretch, 1 to 1 Training lets you pick exactly the techniques your customers ask about. Birmingham is central in England, so students from London usually come by train or by car. Because a course lasts 3 or 4 days, it is worth planning where you will stay rather than trying to commute each morning.
For travelling students, Zavoré holds a partner rate at a hotel near the Academy, and you quote Zavoré when you book. Airport or station pickup can be arranged with your booking, and the price depends on where you arrive. Lunch and refreshments are included each day, so you only need to think about your bed and your journey.
You can hold a bench by paying half the course price, with the rest paid on the day. Call 07592 929191 or email sales@zavore.co.uk, or book online and pay in full.
Once you are home, you can start offering Venetian plaster to the customers you already have. Every student leaves with finished panels to show prospective clients, a Zavoré certificate, and trade pricing on Zavoré materials.
The private course group and its helpline are there for life, so when a tricky wall turns up on a London job you can ask a working applicator before you start. Advanced students also get help to find, price and win a first paid decorative job.
If you would rather see the finished result before you commit, take a look at Venetian plastering in London to see how Zavoré installs these walls, or browse the shop for materials with tracked UK delivery.
The courses are not held in London. They run at the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham, and students from London travel there by train or by car.
No. The Beginner Course is for people with no experience, and it takes you from the theory through to finished panels in 3 days.
Most decorators begin with the Beginner Course to learn how the materials behave. Someone who plasters on site can often move straight to the Advanced Course or book 1 to 1 Training.
You take home your finished panels for a portfolio and a Zavoré certificate. You also get trade pricing on Zavoré materials and a place in the private course group with a helpline.
