Belfast has no Zavoré course of its own, so Venetian plastering training for Belfast means a trip to the Zavoré Academy in Birmingham. Students from Belfast and the surrounding area travel across, spend three or four days learning the craft, and head home ready to use it.
The training suits painters and decorators, plasterers, fit out contractors, designers, career changers and homeowners. You do not need any previous plastering experience to start.
Belfast has a good spread of buildings that benefit from decorative plaster, from Victorian red brick terraces to the newest city centre apartments.
Large parts of the city were built in the Victorian era, and the terraces and villas around the Queen's Quarter and the Malone Road are a familiar sight. Period homes like these often have decent ceiling heights, original features and older walls, so breathable lime based finishes and Marmorino can be used to add depth without trapping damp in the structure.
Alongside the old streets sit modern developments, including apartments in and around the Titanic Quarter. Flat, clean walls like these are well suited to polished plaster, and bathrooms in any property can use tadelakt or microcement for a seamless, water resistant surface.
The Cathedral Quarter and the city centre are home to restaurants, bars and hotels, and venues like these want interiors that feel distinctive. If you already decorate or fit out commercial spaces, Venetian plaster is a way to quote for feature walls, bar fronts and reception areas.
Homeowners in Belfast who are renovating a terrace may ask what else can be done with a wall besides paint. A trained applicator can answer that question with a real sample in hand.
If you are new to the material, begin with the Beginner Course. If you already work with plaster or have completed it, the Advanced Course goes much further.
The Beginner Course teaches the theory, surface preparation, base coats, textures and the finishes of Marmorino, polished plaster and metallics. The Advanced Course adds topics such as artificial rock, stencil work, vein work and high gloss polishing. You can look at the Beginner Course, the Advanced Course and 1 to 1 Training pages before deciding.
Course dates are listed on the training page. If none are shown yet, leave your details there to register interest.
You will need to cross to England and then reach Birmingham, which is in the middle of the country. Plan your outward and return travel around the course days, because the sessions run from 10am to 5pm.
Arriving by air or by rail is an option, and you can also drive. If you want a lift on arrival, ask about airport or station pickup when you book, and the price will depend on where you land.
Because the course is three or four days, you will want a bed nearby. Zavoré has a partner rate at a hotel near the Academy, available when you quote Zavoré. Paying half the course price secures a bench, with the rest due on the day.
The panels you complete in Birmingham come home with you, and they work well as a portfolio when you meet a customer for the first time.
You also gain trade pricing on Zavoré materials, a place in the private course group, and a helpline for life. Advanced students are helped to find, price and win a first paid decorative job.
You can see the type of finished work Zavoré delivers on the page for Venetian plastering in Belfast, and order plasters and tools from the shop with tracked UK delivery.
