Italian Plaster Walls, The Types of Italian Plaster Explained

Italian plaster walls and the types of Italian plaster, coloured plaster facades in Venice, Italy

Italian plaster walls are walls finished in the lime and marble plasters that come from the Italian tradition. "Italian plaster" is not one product but a family of finishes, from the high shine of polished stucco to the stone texture of travertine. This guide explains the main types, what each looks like, and where each one suits.

Venetian plaster is what Zavoré supplies, installs and teaches, and our own team provides Venetian plaster installation across the UK.

The main types of Italian plaster

  • Venetian plaster or stucco veneziano. The best known. Lime and fine marble, laid thin and burnished. See stucco veneziano.
  • Grassello or polished stucco. The finest, glossiest version, polished to a deep shine. See polished plaster.
  • Marmorino. Coarser marble grain with a soft stone look, matt or gently burnished. See Marmorino.
  • Travertino. Imitates travertine stone, with open pores and a honed face. See Travertino.
  • Intonachino. A breathable lime finishing render with visible grain, inside or out. See Intonachino.
  • Pastellone. A lime finish for continuous floors and walls. See Pastellone floors.

Why Italian plaster looks different from paint

The depth comes from layers of real lime and marble pressed with a steel trowel, not from a printed or painted effect. Each wall is laid by hand, so no two are identical. Lime finishes also let solid walls breathe, which suits older British houses.
