Wells is small, old and beautifully kept, and most of its buildings reward a careful approach. That is how we like to work.
Wells is often called the smallest city in England, and its cathedral, the Bishop’s Palace with its moat, the market place and the medieval houses of Vicars’ Close give the centre a character few places can match. Around those landmarks the streets are lined with stone houses, Georgian fronts and old cottages that have been altered many times over the centuries.
The walls in a town like this are usually thick and made of local stone, laid in lime. They absorb moisture and release it again, which is why paints and coatings that seal the surface cause trouble. Many buildings in the centre are listed or sit within a conservation area, so changes to a listed interior can need consent from the council. It is sensible to check before work is planned.
Beyond the centre, Wells has Victorian and Edwardian terraces, interwar and later housing, and newer estates on the edge of the city. The villages below the Mendip Hills add farmhouses and barns with stone walls and uneven surfaces.
We would suggest tadelakt or microcement, on a waterproofed wall, rather than Venetian plaster for a shower.
We start with photos, then survey. In an old stone house we check the condition of the existing plaster, any damp, cracks or movement, and what earlier repairs were made with. If something needs fixing before the decorative coats go on, we tell you plainly.
After you approve the sample and the price, we agree dates. The plaster is tinted in Birmingham, and because the work is some way from our base we plan it in blocks of days, so the team stays and lays each coat in order. Narrow medieval streets and limited parking around the centre make it worth telling us early about access.
If a builder or decorator is already on the job, we can send the plaster, tinted to your colour, with tracked delivery. Decorators who want to learn the finish can book a place on one of our Venetian plaster courses in Birmingham. See also Venetian plaster installation, and every area we cover.
Further reading on old buildings is in our guide to clay plaster and lime plaster.
We can install the finish, but listed interiors can need consent from the council, so check with them first. We are happy to explain the materials and method to help you.
A breathable lime finish such as limewash or Marmorino. These let a stone wall release moisture, whereas an acrylic coating forms a film over the surface.
