Venetian plastering in Oxford

Marmorino, limewash and polished plaster, tinted in Birmingham and laid in Oxford homes by our own applicators.

Zavoré provides Venetian plastering in Oxford for family houses, college and university spaces, restaurants and shops. We are based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel to Oxford to lay authentic Italian lime based Venetian plaster, Marmorino, limewash, tadelakt and our other decorative finishes. Begin with a sample board, or email photos of the walls and your postcode to sales@zavore.co.uk.

Oxford is a city of stone and brick, old and new, and it asks for a finish that respects what is behind the wall.

The buildings of Oxford

The centre is dominated by the university colleges, built in the honey coloured limestone of the region, along with the Bodleian Library, the Radcliffe Camera and the High Street. Much of this is medieval or later and very heavily listed. Beaumont Street and the streets around it add Georgian terraces to the mix, and the whole centre is a conservation area.

Outside the centre the housing falls into several distinct districts. Jericho, beside the canal and the University Press, is a district of small Victorian terraces built for working families. North Oxford, around Banbury Road and Woodstock Road, is known for large Victorian houses in red and yellow brick, built for university dons and professionals. Summertown and Headington have later villas and interwar houses, and the Cowley Road area has long streets of Victorian terraces. Further out, Cowley itself grew around the car works in the twentieth century.

A small Jericho terrace, a large North Oxford villa and a modern flat in a new development all have different walls, and a finish chosen for one will not suit another.

Finishes that suit Oxford homes

  • Marmorino for the large Victorian houses of North Oxford, where tall rooms, solid walls and lime plaster suit a fine, breathable finish.
  • Limewash for Jericho terraces, cottages and country houses nearby, giving soft, matt colour on slightly uneven walls.
  • Clay plaster for studies, bedrooms and nurseries, with a calm, natural surface.
  • Polished plaster for modern flats and extensions, where new walls are flat enough for a deeper sheen.
  • Microcement or tadelakt for bathrooms and showers, because Venetian plaster is not what we recommend inside a shower.

The colours page shows our 48 house shades, and any NCS reference can be matched.

How an Oxford installation works

Oxford is some distance from Birmingham, so jobs are planned as blocks of days. The applicators stay on the job and lay each coat in order, rather than driving back and forth.

We begin with photos and rough measurements, then survey the walls before pricing, looking at the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp and movement, how the room is used, and access and protection. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixed first, we tell you plainly. After the sample and price are signed off, dates are agreed and your plaster is tinted to the sample in Birmingham before it travels.

Parking is tight in central Oxford, and some streets have restrictions on vehicles, so tell us early where we can unload. Colleges and listed buildings have their own approval rules, which are for the owner to confirm. See our Venetian plaster installation page for what we lay.

Decorators, designers and training

If your own builder or decorator would rather apply the plaster, we send tinted materials by tracked delivery. Designers can start with our specification page. Courses take place in Birmingham, and trade accounts are available.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Oxford

Which finish suits a large Victorian house in North Oxford?

Marmorino is a good match for tall rooms with old solid walls, because it is lime based and breathable. We would survey the plaster first and tell you plainly if anything needs putting right.

Can you plaster a small terrace in Jericho?

Yes. Limewash or Marmorino sit well on older brick terrace walls, and small rooms can carry deep colour. Let us know about parking and access on narrow streets.

Do you work in historic Oxford buildings?

We lay decorative finishes in older buildings, but any listed building consent is for the owner and council to settle first. We survey the walls before we price.

Do you travel to Oxford for Venetian plastering?

Yes. Our own applicators travel from Birmingham and, as it is a longer journey, we plan the work in blocks of days.
