Lisburn made its name in linen. The Huguenot Louis Crommelin helped build up the trade here in the seventeenth century, and the Irish Linen Centre still tells that story in the city centre. Lisburn became a city in 2002, and the old centre around Market Square and Christ Church Cathedral keeps many older buildings.
Close to the centre are Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas, usually of brick, with solid walls and plenty of later repairs. Beyond them stretch twentieth century housing and large newer estates. Just outside, the Georgian village of Hillsborough has period houses of its own.
Brick built terraces call for a different approach from a modern estate house. Older walls should be allowed to breathe, while plasterboard needs reinforced joints and the proper primer. We find out which you have before suggesting any finish.
We look at photos first, then survey before we price. The survey covers the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement and how the room is used. If a wall needs skimming or stripping, or a damp problem fixed, we say so plainly rather than cover it over.
When you approve the sample and the price, we fix your block of days. Your plaster is tinted to the sample before leaving Birmingham, in one of our 48 house colours or any NCS reference. Plaster goes on in thin coats with time between them, so skimming, electrics and joinery should be finished and dry beforehand. Read about our installation service or see every area we cover. A lime based finish such as Marmorino suits solid brick walls, because it lets the wall breathe. An acrylic coating forms a film instead.
Yes. Plasterboard needs reinforced joints and a suitable primer first. Once the walls are flat, polished plaster works well.
