Venetian plastering in Hampshire

Marmorino, polished plaster and tadelakt for cathedral city houses, coastal terraces and new builds, laid by our own applicators from Birmingham.

For Venetian plastering in Hampshire, Zavoré sends its own applicators from our Birmingham base to homes from Southsea to the edge of the New Forest. We supply and lay authentic Italian lime plaster along with Marmorino, limewash, tadelakt and microcement. To get going, order a sample board or email photos of your walls and your postcode to sales@zavore.co.uk.

Hampshire is a long way south of us, so jobs here are booked in blocks of days. The applicators stay near the work and lay each coat in sequence instead of driving back and forth.

Hampshire homes, from cathedral city to coast

Winchester, the old royal capital of Wessex, wraps medieval and Georgian houses around its cathedral, with brick fronts, sash windows and lime plastered rooms behind them. Market towns such as Alresford, Romsey and Petersfield have a similar mix of Georgian frontages and older timber frames, often with walls that lean and bow a little.

On the coast the picture changes. Southsea, the seaside quarter of Portsmouth, is lined with Victorian and Edwardian terraces and larger villas, while Gunwharf Quays and the harbour front have brought modern apartment towers. Southampton lost much of its centre in wartime bombing, so postwar rebuilding sits beside surviving stretches of the medieval town walls, with Victorian and Edwardian suburbs such as Portswood and Shirley further out.

In the New Forest and the Test Valley you find brick and thatch cottages and flint walled farmhouses, and Lymington has a Georgian high street running down towards the quay. Basingstoke, Fareham, Whiteley and the growing towns along the motorways add a great deal of modern housing and offices, much of it with plasterboard walls.

That range means there is no single answer. A soft lime finish belongs on a Winchester townhouse, while a Southsea flat with new boards behind the old cornice needs a different preparation.

Which finishes suit Hampshire houses

  • Marmorino for Georgian and older rooms in Winchester and the market towns, since lime lets solid walls breathe and its fine grain sits well with period joinery.
  • Polished plaster for waterfront apartments in Portsmouth and Southampton, where flat modern walls can take a deep, reflective finish.
  • Tadelakt for bathrooms and wet rooms, laid on a properly prepared and waterproofed wall, which is where we use it in place of Venetian plaster.
  • Clay plaster for bedrooms in New Forest cottages, giving a matt, earthy surface on old walls.
  • Cornice and coving for Southsea villas where original mouldings have been lost or damaged.

Planning a Venetian plastering job in Hampshire

Photos come first. A few clear pictures of each wall, rough measurements and your postcode let us answer the simple questions straight away. Then we survey in person, checking what the walls are built from, whether they are flat, cracked, damp or moving, how the room is used, and what access and protection the job will need. Where a wall must be skimmed or stripped before we start, we say so in plain terms.

After you sign off the sample and the price, we agree dates. Material is tinted to that approved sample in Birmingham before it travels south, and the work is planned as a continuous block so the team stays with the job. Please have new plaster dry and other trades finished before we arrive, and keep some gentle heat in the rooms. A cold, damp house slows drying.

Older streets in Winchester and Southsea often have permit parking, so tell us early what is possible outside the house. The full list of what we lay is on our installations page, with more detail on Venetian plaster installation.

Materials and courses for Hampshire decorators

Some Hampshire homeowners already have a decorator they trust. We can tint the Venetian plaster, primers and wax to your colour and post them by tracked delivery. Plasterers and decorators who want to add the finish to their own work can book a course in Birmingham and open a trade account.

Further reading includes our Venetian plaster bathroom guide and tadelakt or microcement. Neighbouring counties appear under every area we cover.

Questions about Venetian plastering in Hampshire

Do your applicators come as far as Hampshire?

Yes. They travel from Birmingham, and Hampshire jobs are planned as a block of days, with dates agreed after the sample and price are approved.

What should go on the walls of a Georgian townhouse in Winchester?

A lime finish such as Marmorino or limewash, because it lets solid walls breathe. Acrylic imitations form a film, which is not what an older wall needs.

Can I have Venetian plaster in a Southsea bathroom?

Not inside the shower itself. There we would use tadelakt or microcement on a waterproofed wall, and Venetian plaster can go on the drier walls of the room.

Can you send plaster to Hampshire for my decorator?

Yes. We tint it to your chosen colour and send it tracked, with the base coats and wax to finish the job.
