Burnished lime and marble walls with real depth, laid by our own applicators who travel from Birmingham. Start with a sample board.
If you are looking for polished plaster in Manchester, you want a lime wall that is burnished until it reflects, laid by people who do it every week. Zavoré is based in Birmingham and our own applicators travel to Manchester to lay it. We survey the walls first, tint the plaster before it leaves Birmingham, and start every job with a sample board so you see the shine and the colour before a trowel touches your room.
Manchester grew fast in the Victorian and Edwardian years, and a lot of what was built then is still lived in. Think of the big red brick villas of Victoria Park, Whalley Range and Didsbury, with their tall hallways, deep bay windows and generous reception rooms. Rooms like these were made to be looked at, and a burnished wall gives them the weight they were designed for.
Polished plaster is made of matured lime putty and marble ground to a powder, laid in thin coats and compressed with a steel trowel until it reflects. It is the finish that rewards a tall, well proportioned room. A hallway that climbs up a staircase, a dining room with a high ceiling, a chimney breast that already has a good fireplace in front of it. In a small, dark back bedroom it can feel like too much, and we will say so.
The same finish suits the other side of the city. The apartment buildings around Deansgate, Spinningfields and NOMA have flat, square walls and good ceiling heights, which is exactly what a reflective surface wants. A polished feature wall behind a bed or a sofa turns a standard flat into something with a point of view.
Polished finishes show every dip. A mirror finish picks out hollows, patched chases and the waves that flat paint hides, so the wall has to be flat before we start. On sound new plasterboard with reinforced joints and the right primer, the work is usually straightforward. In a Victorian house carrying a century of repairs, the preparation can take longer than the plaster, and we survey first so you know that before you commit.
Walls that move are the other limit. A flexing timber partition, loose lath or a new extension still settling will crack a hard thin skin. If a wall in your house is like that, we will suggest marmorino in Manchester or limewash instead, both of which are kinder to an imperfect surface.
The rooms that suit it are the ones people pass through and linger in. Hallways and stairwells. Dining rooms and formal front rooms. A feature wall behind a bed or a fireplace. Cloakrooms, where a small dark room can carry a deep colour. In commercial spaces it works on bar fronts, reception desks and hotel lobbies, where the surface catches the room as people move round it.
On bathroom walls, waxed or sealed, it works well because there is no grout and no joint for mould to sit in. Inside a shower enclosure it is not the right material, and tadelakt is. You can read more about the finish itself on our polished plaster finishes page, including how the coats are built up and how the wax is buffed in.
It starts with a survey, often helped by a few photos. We look at the substrate, the flatness, any cracks or damp, how the room is used and how the work is protected. If a wall needs skimming, stripping or a damp problem fixing first, we say plainly.
Then you choose colour on a sample board. Venetian plaster comes in 48 house colours or any NCS reference, and your plaster is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham. Because Manchester is a good way from our base, the installation is planned in blocks of days, so the team stays on the job and lays each coat in order rather than travelling back and forth. Dates are agreed once the sample and price are signed off. The full process is on our polished plaster installation page.
If you already have a decorator, we sell the materials with tracked delivery across the UK through the shop, and trade accounts are available through our trade page. We should be honest that this is the hardest finish we sell. The burnish has a short window on each patch, and most first attempts end up looking like textured paint. If you want to learn it properly, we run Venetian plaster courses in Birmingham, and you can see them on the training page.
Polished plaster sits alongside a wider family of finishes, and sometimes another one is the better answer for a particular room. Very often, yes. Tall hallways, bay fronted reception rooms and chimney breasts are the rooms it suits most. The thing to check is the wall. A Victorian wall with a century of patching may need skimming flat first, and we survey before we quote so you know what the preparation involves.
Yes. Plasterboard needs its joints reinforced and the right primer, then the plaster goes on in thin coats. New board is often flatter than an old plastered wall, which suits a reflective finish well. Check with your building management about work in shared buildings.
On the walls, waxed or sealed, yes. Inside the shower enclosure no, because Venetian plaster is not for standing water. For that part of the room tadelakt on a properly waterproofed wall is the right material, and we can do both in the same room.
Polished plaster uses marble ground to a powder and is burnished until it reflects. Marmorino keeps a coarser grain and finishes as a soft satin at most. Polished plaster has the shine and the depth. Marmorino is more forgiving of an uneven wall.
