Smooth, cloudy mineral plaster in a concrete grey, trowelled on by our own applicators who travel from Birmingham.
Concrete effect plaster in Manchester is a wall finish for people who want the look of cast concrete without pouring any. It is a smooth, cloudy grey in mineral plaster, trowelled on in thin coats rather than rolled from a tin. Zavoré is based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel to Manchester to lay it. We supply the plaster, Beton Stucco, and start every job with a sample board in your grey.
Manchester has a strong industrial look to its architecture, and concrete effect walls sit comfortably in it. Think of the new apartment blocks of NOMA, the Green Quarter, Ancoats and the Deansgate area, and of lofts and offices carved out of old warehouses. These interiors have flat, square walls, large windows and a lot of hard materials already. A cool, cloudy plaster wall fits that world better than a coat of magnolia.
It also suits the newer end of the suburbs. Loft conversions and rear extensions on Victorian and Edwardian houses in Chorlton, Didsbury and Withington often produce a clean modern room with square walls attached to an old house. One concrete effect wall behind a kitchen island or dining table can anchor that room.
Where it does not suit is the period rooms in those same houses. Concrete fights cornice, picture rail and panelled doors rather than sitting alongside them. In a Victorian front room full of detail we would steer you to Venetian plaster or limewash. We would rather say that now.
Most concrete effect paint is acrylic with grit in it, rolled on and stippled. It reads as textured paint, because that is what it is. Beton Stucco is a fine mineral plaster, tinted to your colour and laid in thin coats with a steel trowel, so the tone sits inside the material and the cloud comes from the blade. It looks like concrete from a foot away, not only from across the room.
It is a thin decorative skin, a few passes thick, not cement render and not structural. It follows the wall behind it. If the substrate moves, opens at a board joint or holds damp, that will show through, so those problems are sorted first.
Concrete reads as concrete because of scale. Big, slow, soft variation across a whole wall looks like a cast panel. Small busy mottling looks like a dated sponge effect. We work a whole wall in one go, keeping a wet edge and changing the direction of the blade so no pattern repeats. On a long wall that can mean two pairs of hands.
Grey is not one colour. It runs from warm putty to cold blue grey, and it behaves differently depending on which way the room faces. North light pulls grey towards blue. South light warms it and flattens the cloud. That is why we look at your sample board in the actual room before the room is started. The concrete effect finishes page shows more of the range.
Open plan kitchen and dining walls. Feature walls behind a hob or a bath, with waterproofer under the sealer. Hallways and stairwells in newer houses. Shopfronts, studios and gallery spaces. Fireplaces and chimney breasts. Loft conversions with flat, square walls. Unsealed, the finish is porous and takes a mark from oil or wine, so in a kitchen or a downstairs loo we seal it, which makes it wipeable and slightly deepens the colour. In a shower enclosure it is not the right material, and tadelakt is.
The wall underneath decides the result. Hollows, old roller stipple, tape lines across plasterboard joints and dusty patches all come up through a thin finish. We survey for exactly that, and the wall is skimmed flat and primed so the coats dry evenly. Corners matter more than faces, because a wavy edge shows in low light.
Plaster is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham. Manchester is some distance away, so the job is planned in blocks of days, with the team staying to lay each coat in order. Dates are agreed once sample and price are signed off. See the concrete effect installation page, or order a sample board now.
Beton Stucco, primer and sealer are sold in the shop, tinted to your colour with tracked delivery. If you are laying it yourself, budget time for preparation as well as plaster. Contractors and developers can ask about a trade account.

Often it is, because the walls are flat and square, which is what a thin mineral skin needs. Check any building rules about alterations first, and we will survey the plasterboard joints, since tape lines can come up through the coats if they are not dealt with.
Yes, with preparation. Behind a hob or a sink we put waterproofer on before the sealer. The sealer makes the wall wipeable and slightly deepens the colour, so we show you a sealed sample.
No. Concrete effect paint is acrylic with texture in it, rolled and stippled. Beton Stucco is mineral plaster trowelled in thin coats, with the tone sitting in the material and the cloud coming from the blade.
In a modern extension or loft, very well. In rooms full of cornice, picture rail and panelled doors we would suggest another finish. Concrete tends to fight period detail rather than sit alongside it.
