Microcement in Surrey

Seamless surfaces with no grout lines, laid over floors, walls and showers by our own team. Lime built alternatives are also supplied for your own builder.

Microcement in Surrey is usually asked about for the same few jobs. They are a bathroom with no grout lines, a kitchen extension floor that runs straight through to the garden doors, and a wet room squeezed into a loft or a 1930s house. Zavoré installs microcement with our own team, who travel from Birmingham, and through the shop we supply the lime built seamless finishes, pastellone and beton stucco, with tracked delivery. A sample board is the place to start.

Microcement is a thin cement based coating trowelled over floors, walls and worktops so there are no joints and no grout. It is only as good as the primer, the mesh and the sealer under and over it, which is why most of this page is about what sits beneath.

Extensions, 1930s houses and the floors beneath

Surrey is a county of extended houses. Families stay and build out, so rear and side extensions, kitchen diners and loft conversions are everywhere, from interwar semis in the towns to larger detached homes on bigger plots. There are also Victorian and Edwardian villas with tiled bathrooms and hallways, and a steady supply of new apartments near the railway stations.

Each of those starts from a different floor. A new extension may have a screed that feels dry on top and is not dry all the way through, and a seamless finish laid too early will pay for it. Many interwar houses have timber ground floors, and a springy board will crack a rigid surface however good the material is, so it has to be stiffened and boarded first. An old tiled bathroom can often be covered, if the tiles are firmly stuck, degreased and keyed, and the grout lines filled and reinforced. Loose or drummy tiles come up.

On older solid walls, such as the brick of a Victorian villa, we look carefully at whether a cement based coating is the right call. A lime built finish stays breathable and can be re waxed in place, and sometimes it is the better answer for the building.

Where microcement works in a Surrey home or business

Our microcement finishes are chosen for these places.

  • Bathrooms and wet rooms with a floor that turns up the wall.
  • Open plan ground floors with no thresholds between kitchen, hall and living space.
  • Shower benches, niches and reveals.
  • Kitchen worktops and splashbacks.
  • Stair treads and landings.
  • Restaurants, offices and town centre fit outs that need a calm surface.

We would steer you away from it on a floor that still moves, and on a wall that will carry heavy fixings. It is also not a cheap alternative to tiling, because the preparation is where the work goes.

How a microcement job in Surrey runs

We survey first, and for a floor that matters more than anything else. We look at what is underneath, how dry it is, any cracks or movement, and how you will use the room. We say plainly if tiles should come up or a floor needs stiffening. Photos can answer small questions before anyone visits.

The sample board lets you agree colour and sheen. Greys, greiges, warm stones and off blacks are what most people choose, and the finish is tinted to your colour before it leaves Birmingham. A seamless floor is laid wet in one go, so a Surrey job is planned in blocks of days with the team staying on site. In a shower, the tanking behind the surface must still be done properly, just as it would be under tile. Our microcement installation page explains more.

Buying seamless materials for your own builder

If your builder is doing the work, the shop sells pastellone for seamless floors and walls, beton stucco for a concrete look on walls, plus primer, matt wax and sealer, all tinted and sent tracked across the UK. Walls are kinder than floors, and a confident decorator can learn on a board. For a bathroom or a floor we would ask you to leave it to us. Builders and decorators can ask about a trade account.

More finishes in Surrey

A seamless floor sits well beside concrete effect plaster in Surrey, which is trowelled mineral plaster for the walls. In wet areas compare it with tadelakt in Surrey, the older lime answer for showers. For the rest of the house look at polished plaster in Surrey, marmorino in Surrey and clay plaster in Surrey, or at limewash in Surrey on older walls. A statement wall could be liquid metal in Surrey. Our full range is gathered in decorative specialists in Surrey, and the classic lime plaster is described under Venetian plastering in Surrey.

Questions about microcement in Surrey

Can microcement go over the tiles in a Surrey bathroom?

Usually yes, and that is half its appeal. The tiles must be firmly stuck, degreased and keyed, with any drummy ones lifted and made good. Grout lines are filled and the surface reinforced before the finish goes on. If tiles are loose or the floor moves, we would take them up.

Is a timber floor in a 1930s Surrey semi suitable for microcement?

Only after it has been stiffened and boarded. A springy timber floor will crack any rigid seamless surface, however good the material. We check the floor at survey and tell you what it needs.

How long should a new extension screed dry before microcement is laid?

Until it is dry all the way through, not only on top. We will not give a figure without seeing the build, because it depends on the screed and the room. Laying too early is a common reason these floors fail.

Should I choose microcement or tadelakt for a Surrey wet room?

Both can work on a properly prepared and waterproofed wall. Microcement is cement based and sealed, and suits floors that run into walls. Tadelakt is burnished lime and soap, softer to look at, and better on curves and older buildings. Tell us about the room and we will say which we would choose.

Send us a photo of the floor or bathroom and we will say what it needs first. Call 07592 929191 (Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm) or email sales@zavore.co.uk with photos, rough measurements and your postcode. You can also order a sample board and start from there.
