Concrete Effect Plaster in Liverpool

A smooth, cloudy grey mineral plaster trowelled by hand, suited to converted warehouses, new apartments, lofts and shopfronts across the city.

Concrete effect plaster in Liverpool is a smooth, cloudy grey wall finish laid in mineral plaster with a steel trowel, not rolled on from a tin. Zavoré supplies it as Beton Stucco, tinted to the colour you choose, and installs it. We are based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel to Liverpool to lay it on city centre apartments, lofts, shops and bars.

It is a modern finish, and it belongs in modern or converted spaces. Not every Liverpool room is one of them, and we will say so.

Warehouse conversions, new apartments and where concrete does not belong

The waterfront and the streets behind it have changed a great deal. The Baltic Triangle and Ropewalks are full of former warehouses turned into flats, studios and offices, and new apartment blocks have gone up around the city centre and the docks. Flat, square, plastered or boarded walls in a space like that are what concrete effect plaster likes. The cool grey reads as part of the architecture rather than an effect.

Loft conversions and rear kitchen extensions in the suburbs are the other natural home. A long open plan wall behind the kitchen and dining area, or a chimney breast in a new living space, takes the cloud well.

The Georgian houses of the Georgian Quarter and the ornate Victorian villas are a different story. Concrete fights rooms full of cornice, picture rail and panelled doors rather than sitting beside them. Our honest advice for a room like that is a lime finish, and you can read about those under the other finishes below. A rented flat where someone will want to roll emulsion back over it in two years is also the wrong place.

The wall underneath decides the result. A concrete finish is thin, so hollows, roller stipple from old emulsion, tape lines over plasterboard joints and soft, dusty patches all show through. We want it skimmed, flat and primed, and we would rather make the wall good than lay good material over a bad one.

Where concrete effect plaster works in a Liverpool building

The finish earns its keep in open, light filled rooms and on commercial frontages.

  • Open plan kitchen and dining walls in rear extensions
  • Hallways and stairwells in newer houses
  • Loft conversions with flat, square walls
  • Fireplaces and chimney breasts
  • Shopfronts, studios and gallery spaces
  • Bars, restaurants and offices that want a calm, modern backdrop

In a kitchen or downstairs loo we seal it, which makes it wipeable and warms the tone a little. Behind a hob or a sink waterproofer goes on first. Inside a shower enclosure it is not the answer, and tadelakt is. See the concrete effect finishes page for more.

Getting the cloud right, and the grey

Concrete reads as concrete because of scale. Big, slow, soft variation across a whole wall looks like a cast panel. Small busy mottling looks like a sponge effect from decades ago. We work a whole wall in one go, keep a wet edge, and change the blade direction so no pattern repeats. Two pairs of hands on a long wall is normal.

Grey is not one colour. A north facing room pulls it towards blue and can make a mid grey feel like slate by late afternoon, while south light warms it and flattens the cloud. We tint to your NCS, RAL or fan deck reference, so a second batch matches the first. Look at a sample board in the room at four in the afternoon before you decide.

How a concrete effect job in Liverpool runs

We survey the walls first, checking flatness, joints, damp, movement and access, and we tell you plainly if they need skimming. Photos help for a first answer. Then a sample in your colour, with or without sealer, is agreed.

Liverpool is away from our Birmingham base, so the job is planned in blocks of days. The team stays on site, lays each coat in order, and protects the space throughout. The material is tinted to the approved sample before it leaves Birmingham. Dates are agreed once the sample and price are signed off. The process is set out on the concrete effect installation page.

For your own decorator, the shop sells Beton Stucco, primer and sealer with tracked delivery across the UK, and trade buyers can ask about a trade account. A small alcove or a chimney breast is a fair first job. A long wall with a return is not.

More finishes in Liverpool

If your room has cornice and panelled doors, look at limewash in Liverpool or polished plaster in Liverpool. For a seamless grey floor that matches the wall, see microcement in Liverpool. A softer mineral wall is marmorino in Liverpool or clay plaster in Liverpool, and a wet room wants tadelakt in Liverpool. For one shimmering feature wall, try liquid metal in Liverpool. Questions about concrete effect plaster in Liverpool

Is concrete effect plaster right for a Baltic Triangle warehouse flat?

Often, yes. Flat, square walls in a converted building suit it well. It is a thin skin, so the wall must be flat, primed and free of damp or movement, and we check that at the survey.

Can I have concrete effect walls in a Georgian Quarter house?

We would think twice. Concrete fights rooms full of cornice, picture rail and panelling. A lime finish such as limewash or polished plaster usually sits better in a period room.

Is concrete effect paint the same thing?

No. Concrete effect paint is an acrylic with texture in it, rolled and stippled. Beton Stucco is a mineral plaster trowelled in thin coats, so the tone sits in the material and the cloud comes from the blade.

Can concrete effect plaster go in a kitchen?

Yes, sealed. Sealing makes it wipeable and warms the tone a little. Behind a hob or a sink we add waterproofer first. Unsealed, it takes a mark from oil or wine.
