Concrete Effect Plaster course

Learn to lay a smooth, cloudy mineral plaster wall, from preparing the background to the second coat and the seal. Taught by working applicators at our training centres in Birmingham, London and Manchester.

The concrete effect plaster course is a hands on training taught at our training centres in Birmingham (the Zavoré Academy), London and Manchester by working applicators who lay this finish on real walls. You learn to build a smooth, cloudy grey wall in mineral plaster with a steel trowel, from priming the background to sealing the finished surface. It suits decorators, plasterers, builders, designers and homeowners, at any level.

There is a lot of concrete effect paint about, and it reads as textured paint because that is what it is. This course is about the real thing, a thin mineral plaster where the tone sits inside the material and the cloud has real depth.

What you learn on the concrete effect plaster course

A concrete finish is a thin skin, a few passes thick, so the wall underneath decides how good it looks. The course starts there and works outwards.

  • Reading a wall, and seeing what will come up through a thin finish, such as hollows, roller stipple from old emulsion, tape lines over plasterboard joints and soft or dusty patches
  • Preparing the background so it is skimmed, flat and primed, and why primer evens the suction so each coat dries the same everywhere
  • Corners and arrises, which matter more than the flat of the wall, because a wavy or rounded angle shows and trowel work cannot hide it
  • Laying Beton Stucco, a fine mineral plaster, in thin coats with a steel trowel
  • Building the cloud, with big, slow, soft variation across a whole wall rather than small busy mottling
  • Keeping a wet edge, changing the direction of the blade so no pattern repeats, and stopping only at a corner or a natural break
  • The second coat, laid thin and pulled tight, then left alone before it is burnished, and why overworking flattens the cloud
  • Colour, and how a grey behaves in a north facing room compared with a south facing one
  • Sealing, which makes the finish wipeable and slightly deepens the colour, and where waterproofer goes behind a hob or sink
  • Problems, including a wall that moves or holds damp, and when the honest answer is a different finish

You work on panels, and you take your finished panels home. The aim is that you know what a good wall looks like, what a poor one hides, and when to say no to a job.

How the course runs and how to book

Concrete effect plaster is taught as 1 to 1 Training. It is 3 days, 10am to 5pm, for £1,500. It is open to any level and shaped entirely around what you want to learn. The days follow you, whether that means preparation, trowel control or the second coat.

You can book online and pay in full, or hold your bench with half (£750) by ringing 07592 929191 or emailing sales@zavore.co.uk. The balance is paid on the day. Dates are agreed with you after booking, and the dates on offer are shown on the Training Academy page.

If you want to train as a team, ask us about private training for a group.

Choosing a training centre

The concrete effect plaster course runs at our three training centres, in Birmingham, London and Manchester, at the same price. The steel trowel cloud takes repetition, so you build it on your own panels at whichever centre you choose. Choose London if you live in London or the South East, Manchester if you are in the North West, and Birmingham if you are in the Midlands, or pick the centre that is easiest for you to reach. You choose the centre and your dates when you book, by phone on 07592 929191 or by email to sales@zavore.co.uk.

If you are travelling to Birmingham, there is a partner hotel rate near the Zavoré Academy (quote Zavoré when you book), and pickups can be arranged for a price that depends on where you arrive.

What is included, and after the course

  • Tuition from working applicators who install these finishes on real walls
  • All materials and tools
  • Lunch and refreshments
  • Your finished panels to take home
  • A Zavoré certificate (this is a certificate from us, not a formal qualification)
  • Trade pricing on Zavoré materials afterwards
  • A private course group with a helpline for life

Afterwards you can buy the materials you used through the Zavoré shop, at trade pricing, with Beton Stucco tinted to the colour you choose and sent by tracked delivery. Trade customers can find out more on the trade page. The course group is there when you meet your first awkward wall.

Who it suits

Decorators are often asked for a concrete look and have only paint to offer. Plasterers and builders already know the trowel and want the cloud. Designers who specify the finish learn what it asks of a wall and a budget. Homeowners can take on a small alcove or chimney breast with real confidence.

Read more about concrete effect plaster as a finish, or the Journal guide to concrete effect walls. If you would rather have a wall done than learn to do it, see concrete effect plaster installation.

More courses at the Academy

Every finish Zavoré installs is a finish it teaches. These are taught alongside this one.

The polished lime courses are on the Training Academy page, under Venetian plastering courses, and they run at the same three training centres.

Questions about the concrete effect plaster course

Do I need experience for a concrete effect plaster course?

No. The course takes any level, and it is shaped around what you want to learn. A first timer spends the days on wall preparation and steady trowel work. Someone who already plasters or decorates can go straight to building the cloud across a full panel.

How long is the concrete effect plaster course?

It runs as 1 to 1 Training, which is 3 days from 10am to 5pm. The days are agreed with you after booking, and the dates on offer are shown on the Training Academy page.

Is this a course in concrete effect paint?

No. Concrete effect paint is an acrylic with grit in it, rolled on and stippled. This course teaches mineral plaster laid in thin coats with a steel trowel, where the cloud comes from the blade and the way each coat dries back.

Is there a concrete effect plaster course near me?

Yes. The concrete effect plaster course runs at our training centres in Birmingham (the Zavoré Academy), London and Manchester, at the same price. London suits London and the South East, Manchester suits the North West, and Birmingham suits the Midlands. You choose the centre and your dates when you book. There is a partner hotel rate near the Birmingham Academy if you need to stay, and pickups can be arranged there.
