Venetian plastering in Suffolk

Limewash, Marmorino and lime Venetian plaster, tinted to your colour in Birmingham and laid across Suffolk by our own applicators.

For Venetian plastering in Suffolk, Zavoré supplies and installs authentic Italian lime based Venetian plaster, limewash, Marmorino and other decorative finishes. We are based in Birmingham, and our own applicators travel to do the work. To begin, email photos of the walls, rough measurements and your postcode to sales@zavore.co.uk, or order a sample board and compare colours.

Suffolk is a long way from Birmingham, so a job is planned in blocks of days. The team stays on site and lays each coat in order rather than travelling back and forth, and we agree dates once the sample and price are signed off.

Timber frames, pink walls and Georgian towns

Suffolk has a great many old timber framed houses. The wool towns of the south, such as Lavenham, Long Melford and Hadleigh, are full of medieval and Tudor frames, many plastered between the timbers and colour washed. Suffolk pink, a traditional limewash tint, is a familiar sight on houses across the county, and decorative moulded plaster called pargeting still decorates old fronts in towns like Clare and Ipswich.

Bury St Edmunds has the ruins of its great abbey, a Regency theatre and a Georgian town centre of brick fronts. Ipswich is the county town on the Orwell, with Victorian terraces, a redeveloped waterfront and the Tudor Christchurch Mansion in its park. Woodbridge on the River Deben has Georgian and earlier houses and a tide mill, and Framlingham is crowned by its castle. On the coast, Southwold and Aldeburgh keep rows of cottages and Victorian houses, and Felixstowe and Lowestoft have Edwardian and later seaside streets.

Across the county, farmhouses and barns have been turned into family homes. All that building means a lot of lime plaster, a lot of old timber and a lot of walls that have moved, so the finish has to be chosen with care.

The right finish for a Suffolk house

  • Limewash for timber framed rooms and cottages, where a soft, cloudy lime surface suits old plaster and can be tinted to a colour of your choice.
  • Marmorino for the Georgian houses of Bury St Edmunds and Woodbridge, where the walls are tall and flat and a quiet sheen suits them.
  • Clay plaster for barn conversions and farmhouse bedrooms, with a natural, matt feel that sits well against beams.
  • Venetian plaster for a formal hall, drawing room or stair in a larger house.
  • Plaster cornice and coving for a period ceiling that needs repairing or recreating.

We would not put Venetian plaster inside a shower. For wet rooms in cottages and conversions, we suggest tadelakt or microcement.

How a Suffolk job is run

Photos come first, then a survey before we price. We check the substrate, flatness, cracks, damp, movement, access and protection. Timber framed walls move gently and can hold moisture, so we look closely and say plainly if something needs resolving first. Acrylic look alikes form a film, which is not a good partner for these walls.

When your sample is approved, we tint the plaster to that colour in Birmingham before it leaves us. There are 48 house colours, or you can give any NCS reference. For rural houses, tell us about the lane, the gate and where we can store materials. In coastal towns, ask about parking along seafront streets. Cold, damp rooms dry slowly, so keep heating gently on.

Our installation page lists every finish.

For listed owners, builders and decorators

Many Suffolk houses are listed, and the rules on work inside can be strict, so speak to the local council or conservation officer before you start. If a builder or decorator is on the job, we can tint plaster for them with tracked delivery, and we teach the craft on courses in Birmingham. Trade accounts make repeat orders easier.
