There is a fitting link between Dudley and lime. The limestone under Wren's Nest and Castle Hill was quarried and mined for centuries, partly as flux for the iron furnaces and partly for burning into lime. Lime plaster on the older walls of the area comes from that same tradition.
The housing is mostly the product of industry. Around Netherton, Dudley Wood and the streets below the castle are Victorian and Edwardian terraces of red brick, built for chain makers, nailers and ironworkers. Most have solid walls, and many have been replastered in patches with whatever was to hand at the time.
Between the wars and after, Dudley spread outwards with council estates and private semis, particularly towards Kingswinford, Wall Heath and Sedgley. Stourbridge, long known for its glassmaking, has a different character again, with Georgian and Victorian houses near the town centre and larger villas towards Pedmore and Oldswinford.
Dudley also has some notable twentieth century architecture. The 1930s concrete animal enclosures at Dudley Zoo, designed by the Tecton group, are listed buildings. For us, though, the everyday question is simpler. Is the wall solid brick that wants a breathable finish, or newer blockwork and board that need priming and reinforcing first?
Photos and rough sizes come first, then a survey visit. We note what the walls are built from, whether they are flat and sound, any cracks or damp, signs of movement, how you use the room, and how we will get materials in and protect the house. If damp needs fixing or a wall needs skimming before we can plaster, we tell you before we give a price.
When the sample and price are agreed, we set the dates. Your colour, one of 48 house shades or any NCS reference, is tinted into the plaster before it leaves Birmingham.
On older terraces, a damp problem is the thing most likely to hold a job up, so it is worth mentioning any history of it when you first get in touch. A heated, dry room makes every coat go on more smoothly. You can see the full list on our installation page.

Lime finishes are breathable, which suits solid brick. But any active damp has to be found and fixed first, and we will say so plainly at the survey.
Yes. Walls from that era can be blockwork, older plaster or board. Uneven areas may need levelling first, because a polished finish shows every dip.
