Aylesbury is the county town of Buckinghamshire, and its oldest part sits on a low hill around St Mary's church. The lanes of the old town, such as Church Street and Temple Square, hold timber framed cottages, Georgian houses and old inns, including the King's Head off Market Square. Much of this area is a conservation area with many listed buildings.
Around that core are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, then a wide spread of postwar housing built as the town grew rapidly in the second half of the twentieth century. In more recent years, large new neighbourhoods such as Fairford Leys, Berryfields and Kingsbrook have added thousands of modern homes on the edges of town, and the villages of the Vale mix old cottages with newer houses.
The difference between an old town cottage and a Kingsbrook house is considerable. One has soft, uneven walls of lime plaster on timber or brick, the other has plasterboard and taped joints. We treat them very differently, and the survey tells us which approach fits.
In a listed building, speak to the conservation officer before work on historic walls. Lime finishes are generally the more sympathetic choice.
Once we have your photos, we arrange a survey. We assess the substrate, check flatness, look for cracks, damp and movement, and ask how the room is used and how materials will get in. If a wall needs stripping, skimming, or a damp problem resolving first, you will hear that from us before the price.
When the sample and price are approved, dates are set. We tint the plaster to the approved sample in Birmingham. Aylesbury is a fair distance from our base, so jobs are organised as a block of days, which lets the applicators stay on the job and complete each coat in its proper order.
New build homes sometimes have walls that are still drying out in the first months, and decorative plaster goes best on a dry, settled wall. The old town has narrow streets and limited parking, so tell us where we can unload. More detail is on the installations page.
